Abstract: The white-collar crime attorney is a lawyer who is competent in general legal principles and in the substantive and procedural aspects of the law related to upper-class financial crime. Based on a sample of 310 convicted white-collar criminals and their defence lawyers, this paper presents results from statistical analysis of relationships between crime characteristics and defence characteristics to predict lawyer fame. Statistical regression analysis was applied to the sample, where amount of crime money and years in prison represent crime characteristics, while number of client cases and lawyer income represent defence characteristics. About 91% of the variation in attorney fame is explained by these four independent variables.

Abstract: The activity of private investigations by fraud examiners is a business of lawyers, auditors and other professionals who investigate suspicions of financial crime by white-collar criminals. Private investigations represent an interesting and unique field of knowledge management. In this paper, a number of private internal investigation reports or cases are evaluated in terms of their knowledge management approaches. The core message from all cases evaluated is that a contingent knowledge management approach is needed in internal investigations. The situation should determine what kind of knowledge to apply in a specific investigative challenge. Legal knowledge seems to dominate many investigations, where forensic accounting knowledge and management consulting knowledge might have been more appropriate.

Abstract: There seems to be no such thing as one single police culture. Depending on organisation, structure and task, culture in the police varies. In this conceptual research, a research model is developed to study impacts of variation in police culture on the extent of intelligence strategy implementation. Strategy implementation is important because failure to carry out strategy can cause lost opportunities and leave police officers reluctant to do strategic planning. Lack of implementation creates problems in maintaining priorities and reaching organisational goals. The strategy execution task is commonly the most complicated and time-consuming part of strategic management. Yet, strategy implementation suffers from a general lack of academic attention. This research paper makes a contribution to police strategy implementation literature by developing a research model to study the extent of intelligence strategy implementation caused by occupational culture in policing.

Abstract: The purpose of private internal investigations by fraud examiners is to reconstruct the past by identifying past events and sequences of events. In this article, work by fraud examiners is studied in terms of maturity; introduce a five-stage model for investigation maturity: chaos, mess, disclosure, clarification, and investment. Based on student term papers in a financial crime class, six investigation reports are allocated to levels in the maturity model. The average score for the investigation reports is a level 3 disclosure, where the investigation is problem-oriented and often limited by the mandate. Based on the low average score, this article discusses the privatization of law enforcement, secrecy of investigation reports, lack of disclosure to the police, competence of private investigators, and limits of the investigation mandate.

Abstract: Fraud examiners in white-collar crime investigations represent the private policing of financial crime. Examiners in crime investigations reconstruct the past to create an account of who did what to make it happen or let it happen. This article addresses the following research question: What is the contribution of fraud examiners in private investigative policing of white-collar crime? Contributions are considered to be the benefits resulting from an investigation. To make private policing a profitable investment, benefits should exceed costs. Based on an analysis of five U.S. and eight Norwegian cases, private policing does not seem profitable.

Abstract: Whereas the criminal justice system is designed to determine whether a police officer as an offender is guilty or innocent, the principal–agent model of policing can provide insights into police officer behavior in law enforcement. Agency theory suggests that the chief as a principal and the field officer as an agent may have different preferences, varying knowledge, and opposite risk willingness when it comes to policing. For example, goals may justify means. In this article, the case of a convicted police officer in Norway is discussed based on principal–agent theory.

Abstract: The work of fraud examiners in private internal investigations is important to many auditing and law firms. They are hired by public and private organizations when there are suspicions of misconduct and financial crime. Such suspicions are sometimes disclosed by whistleblowers who attempt to disclose practices that they perceive as illegal, immoral or illegitimate. This article presents a case from the Norwegian police in which whistleblowers expressed concerns about overtime, use of private cars, and the procurement of equipment for personal use. The main whistleblower was also the ombudsman within the organization, where he repeated his accusations and allegations so frequently that he became the main subject of the private internal investigation. This study finds some support for the blame game hypothesis.

Abstract: This study investigates the emphasis placed on different managerial roles by IT project managers. Six managerial roles were applied in this research: personnel leader, resource allocator, spokesman, entrepreneur, liaison and monitor. With changing business environments, the locus of value creation is no longer within the boundaries of a single firm, but occurs instead at the nexus of relationships between parties. With the growing importance of pooling knowledge resources, knowledge management will have to transcend organizational boundaries in exchanges such as IT outsourcing relationships. We would, therefore, expect to find differences in our two surveys. Design/methodology/approach Two surveys were conducted in Norway to investigate these management roles. Findings In the first survey, which focused on project management roles in internal IT projects, the respondents emphasized the personnel leader role significantly more than other managerial roles. In the second survey, which focused on project management roles in IT outsourcing projects, the respondents emphasized the spokesman role. The empirical results provide evidence that project managers in internal IT projects are more internally oriented than project managers in outsourcing projects. Research limitations/implications Future research should also take into account culture and structure dimensions as well as the specific industry of the IT project. Practical implications This research concludes that project managers of both internal IT projects and outsourcing projects should be more externally oriented to meet future challenges. Originality/value The contingent approach to leadership roles is applied in this research paper.
