Abstract:
La descomposición de la hojarasca es controlada por el clima, la calidad de la hojarasca y la comunidad de descomponedores. Debido a que la descomposición de un determinado tipo de hojarasca también está influenciada por las propiedades de otros tipos adyacentes, la mezcla de distintos tipos de hojarasca puede resultar en efectos no aditivos en las tasas de descomposición. La magnitud de estos efectos parece depender de la diversidad funcional de la hojarasca. Sin embargo, no está claro qué rasgos funcionales o combinación de rasgos explican los efectos de la mezcla de hojarasca, ni si éstos dependen de la diferencia de rasgos de la hojarasca y de los ecosistemas involucrados. Estas incertidumbres dificultan nuestra capacidad para predecir la descomposición en comunidades de plantas. Nuestro objetivo fue comprender si la diversidad funcional (medida como dispersión funcional, FDis) influye en la descomposición de la hojarasca y cómo esta influencia varía entre distintos climas y distintas etapas de descomposición. Calculamos FDis en función de los rasgos de la hojarasca relacionados con la concentración de nutrientes o con la recalcitrancia de la hojarasca, y examinamos si estas medidas de diversidad, en conjunto con dos parámetros climáticos (humedad y temperatura del suelo), explican los efectos de la mezcla de hojarasca en la descomposición. La mezcla de hojarasca produjo principalmente efectos aditivos (i.e. la descomposición de las mezclas es igual al promedio de la descomposición individual de los distintos tipos de hojarasca) en la mayoría de los climas evaluados. En los sitios más secos y cálidos se observaron principalmente efectos no aditivos negativos, que disminuyeron con el tiempo de descomposición. Los efectos no aditivos aumentaron en magnitud con la FDis de las mezclas, en particular, los efectos positivos se relacionaron con la FDis basada en nutrientes y los efectos negativos con la FDis basada en rasgos recalcitrantes. Síntesis . En general, la mezcla de hojarasca no tuvo efectos marcados en las tasas de descomposición a lo largo del gradiente climático estudiado, y la dirección e intensidad de los efectos de la mezcla dependieron del contexto. Los efectos fueron más intensos y negativos en los ecosistemas más secos. Cuando los efectos fueron significativos, la diversidad funcional calculada a partir de grupos seleccionados de rasgos (relacionados con nutrientes o recalcitrancia de la hojarasca) predijo los efectos de mezcla, especialmente cuando los rangos de rasgos funcionales fueron amplios, aunque gran parte de la varianza permanece sin elucidar. Proponemos que las métricas de diversidad funcional basadas en rasgos de la hojarasca que son mecanísticamente relevantes, aplicadas a mezclas diversas de hojarasca de un mismo sitio, y en diferentes climas, pueden ayudar a comprender mejor en qué condiciones y en qué dirección la diversidad de la hojarasca afecta la descomposición.
