Abstract: With the increasing number of cryptic species discovered in major branches of the subfamily Steganinae, accurate species identification is becoming challenging. Possible evolutionary stasis often gives rise to the formation of morphological conservatism and cryptic species, as is the case for the members of the Stegana (subgen. Orthostegana). In this study, the species boundaries of all Asian Orthostegana were accessed based on two mitochondrial genes [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I ( COI ) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 ( ND2 )] using different species delimitation methods and evolutionary models. By integrating morphological and molecular evidence, we clearly validated the evolutionary independence of all five known species and identified nine new species from Southwest China: Stegana (Orthostegana) aini Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) brevivittata Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) cuodi Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) fuscofemorata Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) latipalpula Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) macrostephana Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) mohnihei Peng & Chen sp. nov. , S. (O.) obscurala Peng & Chen sp. nov. , and S. (O.) pinguitia Peng & Chen sp. nov. Moreover, we discussed the relationship between the Asian Orthostegana lineage and the subgen. Oxyphortica, and the necessity of taxonomic re-evaluation for the Neotropical species with molecular data. The high morphological conservatism within Orthostegana is largely the outcome of in situ diversification for adapting to the ecological environment.

Abstract: The small, relict-like moth family Endromidae is well-established within the superfamily Bombycoidea, but relationships within the family have remained vague for the last decade, primarily due to very limited taxon sampling. This resulted in the explicit removal of all internal suprageneric classification by Zwick et al. (2011) when they synonymized Mirinidae and the bombycid subfamilies Oberthueriinae and Prismostictinae with Endromidae. Nucleotide and amino acid data sets of the 13 mitochondrial, protein-coding genes from representatives of 13 of the 16 accepted endromid genera were used to estimate phylogenetic relationships based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods. The results strongly support Endromidae as a monophyletic group and enable the establishment and diagnosis of four subfamilies (Endrominae, Mirininae stat. rev. , Oberthueriinae stat. rev. and Prismostictinae stat. rev. ). Within subfamily Oberthueriinae, we establish three tribes: Oberthueriini stat. rev. , Andracini tribe nov. and Mustiliini tribe nov. We provide morphological diagnoses and a genus-level checklist for the three tribes. Promustilia yajiangensis Wang, X. & Zolotuhin, 2015 is transferred to Mustilizans as M. yajiangensis comb. nov. to establish reciprocal monophyly of the two genera, and Andraca gongshanensis is transferred to Pseudandraca as P. gongshanensis comb. nov. We also synonymize Andraca (Chrypathemola) syn. nov. with Andraca (Andraca), as the latter is deeply nested within the former.

Abstract: Hebius sauteri (Boulenger, 1909) has been long recognized as a widely distributed species with three subspecies, namely Hebius sauteri sauteri from Taiwan Island and southeastern China, Hebius sauteri bourreti (Malnate, 1962) from northern Vietnam, and Hebius sauteri maximus (Malnate, 1962) from Sichuan, southwestern China. However, the validity of these subspecies of the H. sauteri complex has not been evaluated. In the current study, we re-evaluate the taxonomic status of H. s. maximus based on morphological and molecular evidence. Molecular phylogenetic results indicate that H. s. maximus is a distantly diverged clade with respect to H. s. sauteri , and that H. s. maximus is morphologically distinguishable from the nominative subspecies. Therefore, our results support the validity of H. s. maximus and we elevate it to full species status, namely Hebius maximus comb. nov. The distribution range of H. sauteri is revised according to our proposed taxonomic change. Furthermore, detailed redescription, natural history, and coloration of both H. sauteri and H. maximus and comments on the validity of H. s. bourreti are also provided.

Abstract: In the present study, the complete mitogenome of Theretrajaponica was sequenced and compared with other sequenced mitogenomes of Sphingidae species. The mitogenome of T.japonica , containing 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes) and a region rich in adenine and thymine (AT-rich region), is a circular molecule with 15,399 base pairs (bp) in length. The order and orientation of the genes in the mitogenome are similar to those of other sequenced mitogenomes of Sphingidae species. All 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs) are initiated by ATN codons except for the cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 gene ( cox1 ) which is initiated by the codon CGA as observed in other lepidopteran insects. Cytochrome C oxidase subunit 2 gene ( cox2 ) has the incomplete termination codon T and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene ( nad1 ) terminates with TAG while the remainder terminates with TAA. Additionally, the codon distributions of the 13 PCGs revealed that Ile and Leu2 are the most frequently used codon families and codons CGG, CGC, CCG, CAG, and AGG are absent. The 431 bp AT-rich region includes the motif ATAGA followed by a 23 bp poly-T stretch, short tandem repeats (STRs) of TC and TA, two copies of a 28 bp repeat ‘ATTAAATTAATAAATTAA TATATTAATA’ and a poly-A element. Phylogenetic analyses within Sphingidae confirmed that T.japonica belongs to the Macroglossinae and showed that the phylogenetic relationship of T.japonica is closer to Ampelophagarubiginosa than Daphnisnerii . Phylogenetic analyses within Theretra demonstrate that T.japonica , T.jugurtha , T.suffusa , and T.capensis are clustered into one clade.

Abstract: Two cryptic species, which were previously reported as Amolopsricketti , are revealed on the basis of significant morphological and genetic divergences. Amolopssinensis sp. n. from central Guangdong, northeastern Guangxi and southwestern Hunan can be distinguished by the longitudinal glandular folds on the skin of the shoulders and other character combinations. Amolopsyatseni sp. n. from the coastal hills of west Guangdong can be distinguished by the dense tiny round translucent, or white, spines on the dorsal skin of the body, dorsal and dorsolateral skin of the limbs, and other character combinations. The phylogenetic interrelationships of the A.ricketti group have been inferred as ( A.wuyiensis + A.ricketti ) + ( A.yunkaiensis + ( A.albispinus + ( A.sinensis sp. n. + A.yatseni sp. n. ))). This work indicates that the current records of A.ricketti might be a species complex composed of multiple species, and further work is needed to figure out this puzzle.

Abstract: A new species, Achalinus sheni sp. nov. , from central Hunan Province is described, based on the results of molecular systematics and morphological characters according to five specimens. Our molecular phylogeny inferred from the mitochondrial CO1 gene fragment revealed that this new species is most closely related to A. yunkaiensis , but a considerable amount of genetic divergence exists between them ( p -distance ranging from 5.8% to 6.4%) and much distinct genetic divergence exists compared with other known Achalinus species ( p -distance ranging from 10.4% to 15.8%), supporting its validity. Morphologically, it can be distinguished from its congeners by: (1) dorsal scales strongly keeled, 23 rows throughout the body, the outmost row smooth and significantly enlarged; (2) tail relatively short, TaL/TL 0.183 ~ 0.224; (3) the suture between internasals subequal to the suture between prefrontals; (4) loreal one, subrectangular, LorH/LorL 0.53 ~ 0.57; (5) ventrals 161–170, anal entire, subcaudals 55–61, not paired; (6) the length of supraocular equal to or longer than the length of upper anterior temporal; and (7) vertebral line inconspicuous and subcaudal streak absent. Currently, 27 species of Achalinus are known in the world, amongst which 20 species are distributed in China. Moreover, a key to species of the genus Achalinus is provided in this study.

Abstract: Through a combination of morphological and DNA data, a new scolopendrid centipede from southern and southwestern China was revealed: O. tricarinatus sp. nov. The species belong to the politus group but has three sharp tergal keels. Validation of phylogenetic status was performed through molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S rRNA, and 28S rRNA sequences from 16 Otostigmus species. Otostigmus tricarinatus sp. nov. was found to be two populations and varied in the number of spines on the ultimate prefemur, the sutures on a sternite, and a pore-free median longitudinal strip in the pore field. The Yunnan-Guizhou plateau population of O. tricarinatus sp. nov. was sister to the clade O. politus politus + O. politus yunnanensis + Guangxi population of O. tricarinatus sp. nov. with strong support from both BI (bayesian inference) and ML (maximum likelihood) analyses (PP = 1, BS = 97%).

Abstract: Corydoras is a speciose catfish genus from South America with widely investigated phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships. The complete mitogenomes of C. aeneus and C. paleatus were sequenced, assembled, and annotated using next-generation sequencing. The genome arrangements, gene contents, genome structures, base compositions, evolutionary features, codon usage, and tRNA structures of the two mitogenomes were compared and analyzed with nine published mitogenomes of Corydoras . Phylogenetic analysis was performed using concatenated nucleotide sequences with 13 protein-coding genes and two rRNAs with 44 mitogenomes of Siluriformes. These results provide information on the mitogenomes of eleven Corydoras species and evolutionary relationships within the suborder Loricarioidei, which may be applicable for further phylogenetic and taxonomic studies on Siluriformes and Loricarioidei.
