Abstract: Houses and small farms in remote area typically use batteries or generator for their lighting and electricity needs. However, with the use of generators, the availability and cost of fuel to power the generators are of the main concerns. Other type of renewable energy such as wind and solar, which is only available for several hours per day; are also very costly. Hence, a cheaper and reliable option is needed. Although large hydropower plant provides electricity for industry and domestic use, small scale hydropower plant does contributes toward providing this basic need to remote, off-grid areas and backup power particularly in developing countries. Thus, this paper focuses on small scale hydropower, self-excited application which does not require river-run-off or dam for water storage. It is cost effective, environmentally friendly and the turbine system can be manufactured locally. Several existing research in Malaysia are highlighted and small scale hydropower is reviewed based on their application on rural environment.

Abstract: This study examines the rate of occurrence of accidents and their causes in mining and quarry sites in East Coast Malaysia. There are two methods that were used in this study. The secondary data technique was used by gathering all accident reports from Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) inEast Coast Malaysia, and Social Security Organization (SOCSO), Malaysia. The data was used to identify the causes, while the method to identify the rate of accident occurrences is questionnaires. Descriptive tools of statistics such as frequency, percentage and mean were used for the analysis. The study reveals that accidents occur at a low rate at the mining and quarry sites in Malaysia. Different causes of accident were identified such as flying objects or debris, untidy sites, failure of vehicles, pinched while performing work, slip and trip at work areas, faulty equipment and machinery, negligence of workers or operator’s errors, work at sharp edges, and fall from height. This study therefore recommends that relevant control measures should be devised in order to reduce the rate of accident.

Abstract: Workers in construction are the most in danger to the poor health effects of heat exposure every day. A simulated lifting task based on computational thermal model of the workers in the construction is designed and utilized to study the distribution of skin temperature under two different temperatures (32°C and 25°C) and statics relative humidity at 70%. The thermal distribution and simulation for the temperature towards human/manikin body was designed by utilising ANSYS Simulation software. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation revealed the detailed analysis of the thermal distribution around the body/manikin while conducting lifting activities. The CFD also indicated that case study (32 °C/70%) provided the significant physiological effect to the workers in the construction. The mean skin temperature in this case study is 34.7 °C. The heat index shows that when the human working in a hot climate, they had received significantly heat as high as the heat generated from their surrounding. This experiment concluded that skin temperature was influenced significantly by the tropical climate. This particular study provided potential exploration of the environment heat to the construction workers in Malaysia through the prediction of skin temperature.

Abstract: Repetitive workload may cause fatigue and contributed to most cases of workplace related ergonomics injuries in the industries. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physiological responses induced by the repetitive lifting activities based on in the Malaysia construction workers being exposed under high heat and the relative humidity. To achieve the objectives, three male workers participated in this experiments. There were repeated experimental based on the Design of Experiments procedure simulated under environmental temperature (32°C and 25°C) and repetitive lifting task (15 min). The physiological responses measured where the heart rate (HR) and maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). The experiments were conducted in a thermal climate simulation chamber and the parameters were set-up based on the real working environment. The results showed that the subjects highly experiencing fatigue when they were exposed to high temperature at 32°C. These phenomena were determined through their HR and VO2max, which were increased gradually under prolonged environment exposure. This study found that the significant heat stress increased the workload intensity in repetitive lifting tasks significantly correlated with the physiological responses of the subjects represented through the HR and VO2max. The study concluded the need of management to reconsider the impact of work environmental temperature and relative humidity to their workers especially to those work under tropical climate.

Abstract: Thermal have significantly impact the productivity of work as well as the occupants’ satisfaction to their surroundings. The objective of this study is to evaluate the implication of thermal environmental conditions to human/manikin in a ventilated air conditioning space using CFD simulations. The thermal distributions of environmental parameters, which were air velocity, air temperature, radiant temperature, inside an office room with air-conditioning system were simulated. The design of experimental study was utilised through the controlled conditions based on the real laboratory studies and real case studies which were later on utilised as the external validity of the field studies. The model of the office environment has been built in the ANSYS Engineering simulation software. The thermal distributions, spatial profiles of PMV are obtained to illustrate thermal conditions intuitively. The distribution of PMV indicated that operative temperature at the 23 °C shows that the PMV is at the level of comfort. Meanwhile the value of PMV for the operative temperature at 23 °C is at 0.79 near the skin of manikin. The research outputs provide useful information for engineers especially in designing air-conditioning system in order to design and build a comfortable indoor environment climate especially in the office environment.
