Abstract:
The Freedericksz transition induced by a perpendicular static magnetic field of a homeotropical alignment nematic liquid crystal doped with a small amount of double-azo has been studied. It was observed that the doped 5CB markedly decreases the critical magnetic field, compared to that in the case for pure 5CB. We regard that in the guest-host system, the guest double-azo has a much larger diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropy and will drag the 5CB molecule to reorientate under a weaker magnetic field.
