Abstract: This article asks what kind of science psychology should be and what new readings of Vygotsky can contribute to answering this question. Methodology and method are key to constituting psychology as a science. Hence, the focus is on three major methodologic-methodic approaches to what Vygotsky referred to in his Notebooks towards the end of his life as his and his colleagues’ “acmeist psychology” – the objective-analytical, the method of double stimulation and the semic method. Each will be discussed in its own right, followed by a discussion of the interrelatedness of the three in order to provide stimulation for future possibilities. These possibilities – it will be argued – lie in decisively re-orienting psychology as a science that brings single cases and complex semiotic analyses to the fore and thereby also rethinks psychology’s relation towards the arts, especially literature.

Abstract: This editorial introduces the current edition of psychosozial dedicated to the notion of Bilderflut. The notion of Bilderflut (literally a »flood of images« in German) speaks to the omnipresence of images in various aspects of human life and to the psychosocial roles played by images and image-related practices. Within the social sciences, images have long been dramatically underappreciated, being seen primarily in their role as illustrations of text. The current edition is an attempt to address this deficit. In order to further contextualize the contributions, the metaphor Bilderflut which is widely used is discussed. Then the iconic constitution of humans and the role of images for their selfand world-understanding and the possibilities of iconic communication and (self‑)articulation are indicated. Finally the relations between language and image are focused and the iconic and pictorial turn with their respective assumptions within the horizon of a critique of logocentrism.

Abstract: Minimalist ways of life have become fashionable recently. In the present contribution and in this thematic issue minimalist forms of life shall be addressed beyond their shiny »Instagram-facade«. The research area in question belongs to works focussed upon the material dimension. This dimension has gained terrain – albeit not in all pertinent disciplines – due to the »material turn« in the humanities. In this editorial various aspects will revolve around scientific and popular discourses on minimalism. Among other issues, we will address questions as the following: What exactly is the appeal of the »lightness of being« and of letting go, but also of possessing material objects? What characterizes minimalism in its narrower and broader sense? And: What are the historical horizons of ideas and social movements in which minimalist ways of life are to be found? Since minimalism has increasingly become a subject of controversies in the last years, a further focus of our survey shall lie on critical discourses.

Abstract: Ernst Boesch (1916–2014) is well known for his symbolic action theory and distinctive approach to cultural psychology. In contrast, his numerous contributions as an educational psychologist have remained nearly unnoticed up to now. Against this backdrop, this article highlights some crucial phases in Boesch’s biography that demonstrate his strong involvement in educational psychology in general. It then reconstructs and discusses the main constituents of what one could call Boesch’s cultural psychology of education, which he developed in the context of his work as director of the Forschungsstelle für Entwicklungshilfe, insbesondere Erziehungshilfe (Institute for Research on Developmental Aid – specifically educational aid) – which was later renamed Sozialpsychologische Forschungsstelle für Entwicklungsplanung (Institute for Social Psychological Research on Developmental Planning) – during the years from 1962 to 1986. Finally, some conclusions are presented.

Abstract: The present contribution focusses on the question of what the Erlangen Psychology of Action was. An attempt to answer this question is made in three steps: First, the genesis, development, and establishment of the Erlangen Psychology of Action, second, its notion of action and forms of explaining actions, and, third, difficulties and alternatives with reference to empirical data are traced. The sketchy and pointed reconstruction of the Erlangen Psychology of Action is always contrasted with other psychologies of action, in order to be able to work out its specific features.
