Abstract: Iridium(III) is often considered to be one of the most inert octahedral metal ions. Herein we present a phenanthroimidazole‐based bis‐cyclometalated iridium(III) chloride undergoing a facile chloro ligand exchange with iodine, in a gas‐solid reaction under ambient conditions. Monitoring the progress of the reaction by X‐ray diffraction analysis reveals the crystal‐packing‐induced exceptional stereoselectivity of this topochemical transformation. The results provide excellent opportunities to modulate the geometry and kinetic properties of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes that may be very promising in catalysis and design of anticancer agents.

Abstract: Four 2-arylbenzimidazoles (aryl = 4-Br-phenyl (1), 3-Br-phenyl (2), 4-I-phenyl (3), 3-I-phenyl (4)) were synthesized and characterized by 1H, 13C{1H} NMR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both pairs of benzimidazoles bearing the halogen atom at the same position form isostructural crystals, in which para-substituted compounds 1 and 3 are assembled by weak C–H···π and π···π interactions while their meta-isomers 2 and 4 are linked via intermolecular halogen···nitrogen and C–H···π contacts.

Abstract: The transcription factor Bach2 is required for germinal center formation, somatic hypermutation (SHM), and class‐switch recombination (CSR) of immunoglobulins. SHM and CSR are initiated by activation‐induced cytidine deaminase (AID) which has potential to induce human B cell lymphoma. To understand the role of Bach2 in AID‐mediated immunoglobulin gene diversification processes, we established a BACH2 ‐deficient DT40 B cell line. We show that in addition to allowing SHM, Bach2 drives immunoglobulin gene conversion (GCV), another AID‐dependent antibody gene diversification process. We demonstrate that Bach2 promotes GCV by increasing the expression of AID. Importantly, we found that the regulation of AID is independent of Blimp‐1 and that BACH2 ‐deficient cells have altered expression of several genes regulating AID expression, stability and function. Furthermore, re‐expression of BACH2 or AID in Bach2KO cells restored the SHM and GCV defects. These results demonstrate that Bach2 has a previously unappreciated role in the production of high‐affinity antibodies.

Abstract: The title compounds, 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1 H -perimidine (C 16 H 11 N 3 ; 1 ), 1-methyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1 H -perimidine (C 17 H 13 N 3 ; 2 ), and 1,3-dimethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1 H -perimidinium iodide (C 18 H 16 N 3 + ·I − ; 3 ) were synthesized under mild conditions and their structures were determined by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The N -methylation of the nitrogen atom( s ) at the perimidine moiety results in a significant increase of the interplane angle between the pyridin-2-yl ring and the perimidine system. The unsubstituted perimidine ( 1 ) forms a weak intramolecular N—H...N bond that consolidates the molecular conformation. In the crystal structures of 1 – 3 , the molecular entities all are assembled through π–π and C—H...π interactions.

Renal Sinus Fat Is Expanded in Patients with Obesity and/or Hypertension and Reduced by Bariatric Surgery Associated with Hypertension Remission

Abstract: Renal sinus fat is a fat depot at the renal hilum. Because of its location around the renal artery, vein, and lymphatic vessels, an expanded renal sinus fat mass may have hemodynamic and renal implications. We studied whether renal sinus fat area (RSF) associates with hypertension and whether following bariatric surgery a decrease in RSF associates with improvement of hypertension. A total of 74 severely obese and 46 lean controls were studied with whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A total of 42 obese subjects were re-studied six months after bariatric surgery. RSF was assessed by two independent researchers using sliceOmatic. Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was estimated according to the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration). Patients with obesity accumulated more RSF compared to lean controls (2.3 [1.7–3.1] vs. 1.8 [1.4–2.5] cm2, p = 0.03). Patients with hypertension (N = 36) had a larger RSF depot compared to normotensive subjects (2.6 [2.0–3.3] vs. 2.0 [1.4–2.5] cm2, p = 0.0007) also after accounting for body mass index (BMI). In the pooled data, RSF was negatively associated with eGFR (r = −0.20, p = 0.03), whereas there was no association with systolic or diastolic blood pressure. Following bariatric surgery, RSF was reduced (1.6 [1.3–2.3] vs. 2.3 [1.7–3.1] cm2, p = 0.03) along with other markers of adiposity. A total of 9/27 of patients achieved remission from hypertension. The remission was associated with a larger decrease in RSF, compared to patients who remained hypertensive (−0.68 [−0.74 to −0.44] vs. −0.28 [−0.59 to 0] cm2, p = 0.009). The accumulation of RSF seems to be involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension in obesity. Following bariatric surgery, loss of RSF was associated with remission from hypertension.
