Abstract:
Libraries are more and more confronted with the dramatic transition from print to electronic resources. Being traditional institutions to preserve knowledge and culture, their role is to guarantee that the national cultural heritage is available to posterity. As to printed matter, the requirements for preservation are relatively clear, whereas the case is far more complex with regard to digital resources. Thus, the preservation of electronic content presents libraries with heretofore unknown challenges. The “Berlin Appeal for the Preservation of Digital Cultural Heritage” summarizes these challenges and calls for the realization of appropriate measures. On September 16th, 2013, the German Library Association (dbv) adopted the Berlin Appeal expressly in the context of a press release – a step which is more than welcome. The following article centres upon the legal issues raised by long-term digital preservation.
