Abstract:
Prior research on overarching patterns of changing life courses is characterized by various and confusing terms and concepts. Building on recent methodological advances, this paper suggests applying a multidimensional concept in order to analyze social disparities in the heterogenization of life courses. Using data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), the paper focuses on educational differences in changing patterns of heterogeneity of family life courses. Results point to an increase in life-course differentiation but to no clear trend toward pluralization or destandardization. Women with a low level of education display the most heterogeneous life courses, and differences among social groups have been increasing across cohorts. Overall, it is shown that distinguishing between the dimensions of destandardization, differentiation, and pluralization helps to identify structural patterns of change in (family) life courses, as well as social disparities within these processes.
