Abstract:
Am 1. August 1990 ist Norbert Elias in seiner Amsterdamer Wohnung gestorben. Einige Wochen zuvor, am 22. Juni, war er 93 Jahre alt geworden. Geboren noch im 19. Jahrhundert, spiegelt sich in seiner Person vieles aus der deutschen Geschichte und der der deutschen Juden wider. Aufgewachsen ist er im schlesischen Breslau in einem behüteten bürgerlich-jüdischen Milieu. Die Schrecken und Grausamkeiten des ersten Weltkrieges zerstörten dann den Schleier, durch den der junge Mensch bis dahin die Welt erlebte. An Hand biographischen Materials, autobiographischer Äußerungen und der wissenschaftlichen Publikationen läßt sich zeigen, daß Elias das paradigmatische Urerlebnis des Krieges und der relativen Machtlosigkeit des einzelnen in seine spezifische Fragestellung überträgt. Die Untersuchung geht mit Elias davon aus, daß sich die Muster des Denkens, Handelns und Fühlens der Menschen im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung der Gesellschaft, der sie angehören, herausbilden. Dies ist gleichzeitig ein Plädoyer für eine prozeßsoziologisch-biographische Vorgehensweise, bei der die Verflechtung von Gesellschaftsgeschichte, Werk- und Personengeschichte erarbeitet werden und damit aufgezeigt werden kann, was an dem Verhalten eines einzelnen Menschen persönliche Ausgestaltung und was repräsentativ für den Standard der Gesellschaft ist, der er angehört.
