Abstract: The species of three subgenera of the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Braconinae), i.e. Glabrobracon Fahringer, 1927; Lucobracon Fahringer, 1927; and Uncobracon Papp, 1996 from China are revised and 31 species are recognised, including 11 new species, i.e. Bracon (Glabrobracon) indistinctus sp. nov. , B. (G.) leptotes sp. nov. , B. (G.) longistriatus sp. nov. , B. (G.) megaventris sp. nov. , B. (Lucobracon) brevicarinatus sp. nov. , B. (L.) coarctatus sp. nov. , B. (L.) curculiovorus sp. nov. , B. (L.) flavitestaceus sp. nov. , B. (L.) quadratus sp. nov. , B. (Uncobracon) eurysulcatus sp. nov. and B. (U.) longwangshanensis sp. nov. The new species are described and illustrated. Keys to the subgenera of the genus Bracon and the Chinese species of three subgenera Glabrobracon , Lucobracon and Uncobracon are provided.

Abstract: Two new genera and four new species of cave-adapted ground beetles are described from Sichuan Province, southwestern China. Uenoaphaenops gen. nov. is established to place the trechine species Qianotrechus fani Uéno, 2003 occurring in the limestone cave Hua’er Dong, southeastern Sichuan (Luzhou: Gulin). Chu pheggomisetoides gen. nov. & amp; sp. nov. , from the limestone cave Hanwang Dong, northeastern Sichuan (Guangyuan: Chaotian), is somewhat like the European cavernicolous trechine genus Pheggomisetes Knirsch, 1923, from Bulgaria and Serbia, in particular in the configurations of head and pronotum. Boreaphaenops liyuani sp. nov. , also from Hanwang Dong, is the second representative of the genus and the first record in Sichuan. Agonotrechus sinotroglophilus Deuve, 1999, a troglophile, is reported from Sichuan for the first time. The other two new species belong to the platynine genus Jujiroa Uéno, 1952: J. uenoi sp. nov. from the cave Banche Dong on the northern side of the Dadu River (Leshan: Shawan) and J. wangzheni sp. nov. from the cave Hua’er Dong, which is sympatric with Uenoaphaenops fani (Uéno, 2003) comb. nov. A distribution map for the localities of all abovementioned caves and a key to Jujiroa species known in Sichuan are provided.

Abstract: Aims : Pinus yunnanesis is commercially, culturally and economically important, but there is a lack of ecological data on its role in stand dynamics. Our aims are to clarify the structure, composition, regeneration and growth trends of primary mature P. yunnanensis forests. Study area : The Tianchi National Nature Reserve in the Xuepan Mountains, Yunlong County, northwestern Yunnan, China. Methods : We investigated forests containing P. yunnanensis , measured tree ages and analyzed the data. Results : Six forest types were identified: (1) coniferous forest: Pinus yunnanensis (Type 1); (2) mixed coniferous and evergreen broad-leaved forest: P. yunnanensis - Lithocarpus variolosus (Type 2); (3) mixed coniferous and deciduous broad-leaved forest: P. yunnanensis - Quercus griffithii (Type 3); (4) mixed evergreen broad-leaved and coniferous forest: Castanopsis orthacantha-P. yunnanensis-Schima argentea (Type 4); (5) mixed coniferous, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forest: Pinus yunnanensis-Schima argentea-Quercus griffithii (Type 5); (6) mixed coniferous and evergreen broad-leaved forest: Pinus armandii-Quercus rehderiana-Pinus yunnanensis (Type 6). The size- and age-structure and regeneration patterns of P. yunnanensis were highly variable within these six forest types. P. yunnanensis regeneration was well balanced in forest Type 1 as compared to the other five types. All six forest types were identified as rare and old-growth with P. yunnaensis trees reaching ages of more than 105 years (a maximum age of 165 years with a diameter 116 cm at breast height) except for the Type 4 forest (a 90-year-old stand). Growth rates of P. yunnanensis , based upon ring width measurements, were high for the first 10 years, then declined after the 10th year. In contrast, basal area increment (BAI) increased for the first 25 years, plateaued, and only declined as trees became older. Trees in the older age classes grew more quickly than younger trees at the same age, a consequence of either site quality or competitive differences. The BAI of P. yunnanensis in all age classes in the Tianchi National Nature Reserve was much higher than those of the secondary and degraded natural P. yunnanensis forests of other areas. Conclusions : The P. yunnanensis forests of the Tianchi area appear to be some of the last remnants of primeval and old-growth forests of this species. These forests are structurally diverse and contain a rich diversity of overstory, mid-story, and understory species. Abstract: Nearly 450 Margattea specimens were collected from 27 locations in China and their morphology was examined. Then 68 Margattea COI sequences were obtained and used to carry out phylogenetic analyses as well as species delimitation analyses using General Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC), Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), and Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP). GMYC analysis resulted in 21 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) (confidence interval: 20–22), which was completely consistent with the result of the bPTP. There were 15 MOTUs using the ABGD method. The number of MOTUs was slightly different from the assigned morphospecies (16). As to the incongruence between molecular and morphological results, we checked the specimens again and made sure that most morphological differences were determined to be intraspecific differences (except the difference between M. angusta and M. mckittrickae ), although a large genetic distance existed. Finally, 16 Margattea species from China were defined in this study, of which, seven new species are established, i.e. Margattea deltodonta J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , Margattea cuspidata J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , Margattea caudata J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , Margattea paratransversa J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , Margattea disparilis J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , Margattea transversa J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov. , and Margattea bicruris J-J He & amp; Z-Q Wang, sp. nov.

Abstract: Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli . Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals 〈 1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

Abstract: We propose the genus Flospes gen. nov. for two new species, Flospes guangxiensis sp. nov. and Flospes viridipennis sp. nov. , obtained from Guangxi and Hainan provinces, China, respectively, based on male genitalia traits. Three other species with similar genitalia are placed in the new genus: Flospes fujianensis (Wang et al., 1999), comb. nov. , Flospes hainanensis (He et al., 2010), comb. nov. , and Flospes denticulatus (Liu & amp; Shi, 2011), comb. nov. The new species are described, illustrated, and their ranges are given.
