Abstract:
Pregnancy outcomes after bariatric surgery seem to be favorable with a reduced risk for gestational diabetes, hypertension, and foetal macrosomia, but an increased risk for newborns with low weight for gestational age and prematurity. Nutritional deficiencies of varying severity for mothers and newborns are reported, as well as surgical complications with a prognosis conditioned by the diagnosis pitfalls during pregnancy. BARIA-MAT is a multidisciplinary working group, who proposes practical guidelines based on the methodology used by the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de santé). These recommendations cover the following questions: timeto- conception after bariatric surgery, contraception, preferred type of surgery for women of childbearing age, obstetrical management, nutritional support and management of nutritional deficiencies, screening and management of gestational diabetes, weight gain during pregnancy, surgical emergencies, and specific care for mothers in the postpartum period and newborns.
