Abstract: Beef bones contain a gelatin component that can be further extracted. This extraction process requires the right solvent to produce good yield and quality. Gelatin has multifunctional properties, namely biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic. This is because it is a natural ingredient that contains high amino acids. The most dominant amino acid content as a parameter for determining the quality of gelatin is proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline. The purpose of this study was to study the effect of the solvent used as a medium for soaking cow bones to be converted into gelatin. The solvent variations used include NaOH, HCl, H2SO4, CH3COOH, and NaHCO2. The concentration variations are 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (%). This research method includes the preparation of cow bone samples, fat removal, mineral removal, soaking for 7 days, and extraction. The extraction process was carried out with variations times of 4 h and 6 h. The results of the study showed that the highest yield value was with 5% HCl solvent with 4 h extraction time of 26.5% with 8.67% water content, 0.9% ash content, pH 4.64, and viscosity 3.19 cP (p 〈 0.05). A good isoelectric point is produced when using an acidic solvent, which is between 5.3–5.8. The cross-linking of gelatin with chitosan, glutaraldehyde, and glucose was successfully carried out with the FTIR absorption indicator at a wavelength of 3200 cm−1, which indicates the presence of hydrogen bonds, 1022 cm−1, which indicates the breakdown of aldehyde bonds in glutaraldehyde compounds into C-O bonds. According to the microbial test, when gelatin is combined with chitosan, there will be an increase in the microbial inhibition zone. This shows that the development of gelatin materials is very prospective and promising.

Abstract: Methane is a potential alternative energy source which is abundant and produces lower CO2 emissions when it is used as fuel due to the content of C in the methane molecule is much lesser than its H content. Besides in a form of gas, methane in nature can also be in the form of methane hydrates. The formation process of methane hydrates in nature can be adopted as a method of storage of methane. In this study, a thermodynamics review will be studied related to temperature and pressure in a phase equilibrium system of methane hydrate . Thermodynamic model aims to predict the stability of methane hydrates for effective storage of methane. Each volume of methane hydrate contains as 164 volumes of methane gas under standard conditions ( STP ). The study was conducted by adsorbing methane on a wet porous carbon with the method of static volumetric.. The experimental results show that at the temperature of 274 K methane hydrates was formed at a pressure of 2.75 MPa; at a temperature of 275 K, pressure of 3.16 MPa; at a temperature of 276 K, pressure of 3.44 MPa, while at a temperature of 277 K, pressure of 3.67 MPa. Temperatures and pressures data are used to calculate the parameters of Langmuir equation constants modeled by the Van der Waals - Platteeuw for the chemical potential of water in the hydrate phase, Holder et al for the chemical potential of water in the liquid phase, as well as for the Gibbs-Thomson effect of porous carbon media.

Abstract: Clay is an abundant material that is widely used as an adsorbent in pristine or pillared form. Pillared clays feature better properties, e.g. higher specific surface area, thus they can adsorb a higher quantity of adsorbates compared to pristine material. In this work, a preparation of pillared clay using Indonesian natural bentonite and its potential for ethylene removal are presented. The novelty is that a pillaring agent of cobalt (mixed with aluminum) was used, which not only served as a pillar but also as an active metal adsorbent for ethylene. Natural bentonite was pillared using Al (NO3)3.9H2O and Co (NO3)2.6H2O. The resulting material was then calcined at 250 °C. The final material was characterized by N2-sorption analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The cobalt to aluminum ratios used were 1:9, 1:3, 1:1, 1:1/3, and 1:0. From characterization, the Co-Al pillared bentonite featured a specific surface area of up to 114 m2/g (pristine bentonite = 42 m2/g). In the adsorption test, an enhanced ethylene uptake of up to 6 times (at ambient temperature) compared to pristine bentonite was obtained. Thus, the results highlight the potential of cobalt oxide/pillared clay as ethylene scavenger.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the characterization of ionic and covalent interactions to form a crosslinking network with chitosan as a wall material of microcapsules. Red ginger oleoresin microcapsule was prepared by emulsion crosslinking method. Red ginger oleoresin was mixed and stirred with chitosan solution to form an emulsion, then added to corn oil and stirred again to form a second emulsion. Crosslinking agents of glutaraldehyde saturated toluene (GST) or sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) solution was slowly added to the emulsion. When using a crosslinking agent of TPP solution was added glacial acetic acid to adjust pH. Red ginger oleoresin microcapsules were filtered and washed with petroleum ether followed by n-hexane and then dried in an oven. Microcapsules from chitosan that are cross-linked with GST produce higher yield and size of microcapsules compared to TPP. Whereas, the highest encapsulation efficiency produced from chitosan cross-linked with TPP was 91.63±0.02%. Meanwhile, the highest cumulative release was obtained from TPP cross-linked chitosan microcapsules of 63.71% and the lowest was 50.01% from chitosan microcapsules that cross-linked with GST. The conclusion of this study was the differences between ionic and covalent crosslinking agents produce different microcapsule characteristics. Microcapsules from chitosan cross-linked with GST generated more compact with a smoother surface than with TPP.
