Abstract:
What's new? Triage with a new high‐resolution microscopy technique improved the specificity of cervical screening in El Salvador. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is a low‐cost screening technique that requires no follow up visit. However, techniques with higher sensitivity and specificity would be preferable. High‐resolution microendoscopy (HRME) is a low‐cost fiber‐optic imaging device that allows providers to visualize the nuclei of cervical epithelial cells in vivo. Here, the authors compared five different screening and triage strategies. They demonstrated that screening with HPV testing is superior to VIA, and triage with HRME increased the specificity of detecting cervical precancer.
