Abstract: Resistance to antimicrobial agents in Streptococcus pneumoniae is increasing rapidly in many Asian countries. There is little recent information concerning resistance levels in Vietnam. A prospective study of pneumococcal carriage in 911 urban and rural Vietnamese children, of whom 44% were nasal carriers, was performed. Carriage was more common in children 〈 5 years old than in those ≥5 years old (192 of 389 [49.4%] versus 212 of 522 [40.6%] ; P , 0.01). A total of 136 of 399 isolates (34%) had intermediate susceptibility to penicillin (MIC, 0.1 to 1 mg/liter), and 76 of 399 isolates (19%) showed resistance (MIC, 〉 1.0 mg/liter). A total of 54 of 399 isolates (13%) had intermediate susceptibility to ceftriaxone, and 3 of 399 isolates (1%) were resistant. Penicillin resistance was 21.7 (95% confidence interval, 7.0 to 67.6) times more common in urban than in rural children (35 versus 2%; P , 〈 0.001). More than 40% of isolates from urban children were also resistant to erythromycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. Penicillin resistance was independently associated with an urban location when the age of the child was controlled for. Multidrug resistance (resistance to three or more antimicrobial agent groups) was present in 32% of isolates overall but in 39% of isolates with intermediate susceptibility to penicillin and 86% of isolates with penicillin resistance. The predominant serotypes of the S. pneumoniae isolates were 19, 23, 14, 6, and 18. Almost half of the penicillin-resistant isolates serotyped were serotype 23, and these isolates were often multidrug resistant. This study suggests that resistance to penicillin and other antimicrobial agents is common in carriage isolates of S. pneumoniae from children in Vietnam.

Abstract: Nghiên cứu định tính nhằm mô tả quan niệm và cách xử trí của giáo viên và cha mẹ học sinh về vấn đề sức khỏe tâm thần (SKTT) ở học sinh trung học cơ sở (THCS) tại 5 tỉnh thuộc miền Bắc, Trung, Nam và Tây Nguyên.

Abstract: Pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is a high economic value plant species that brings the main income to the people at Loc Hung commune. So the pepper’s yield plays a significant role in people’s life in this region. To assess the influence of environmental factors on the growth and development of pepper, we need to analyse the structural characteristics of soil nematode communities in order to promptly detect the levels of parasitic nematodes infection as well as assessment of soil environment status based on nematode communities. Study results at five sampling stations are analyses of 30 genera of nematodes belonging to 6 major trophic groups (bacterial feeders, fungal feeders, algal feeders, omnivores, carnivores and plant parasites). Calculation results of indices such as SUM(MI), SUM(MI2-5), MI and PPI showed that soil nematodes community is very little affected by the bacteria feeder group and the rate of parasitic nematode pepper quite severe. Analysis of correlation between trophic groups showed that nematodes are sensitive to environmental factors. This means the potential use of nematodes as a biological indicator for soil quality is possible.

Abstract: The requesting of detailed information on new drugs including drug-drug interactions or targets is often unavailable and resource-intensive in assessing adverse drug events. To shorten the common evaluation process of drug-drug interactions, we present a machine learning framework-HAINI to predict DDI types for histamine antagonist drugs using simplified molecular-input line-entry systems (SMILES) combined with interaction features based on CYP450 group as inputs. The data used in our research consisted of approved drugs of histamine antagonists that are connected to 26,344 DDI pairs from the DrugBank database. Various classification algorithms such as Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and XGBoost were used with 5-fold cross-validation to approach a large-scale DDIs prediction among histamine antagonist drugs. The prediction performance shows that our model outperformed previously published works on DDI prediction with the best precision of 0.788, a recall of 0.921, and an F1-score of 0.838 among 19 given DDIs types. An important finding of the study is that our prediction is based solely on the SMILES and CYP450 and thus can be applied at the early stage of drug development.

Abstract: Vietnam is among the countries with the highest smoking prevalence among male adults, as well as high prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure at indoor places. In many countries, including Vietnam, exposure to tobacco smoking is greatest in restaurants/bars and hotels. This study aims to analyze the compliance of hotels and restaurants to smoke-free environment regulations before and after an intervention. Methods: Direct observations were done at the receptions, conference rooms, designated smoking areas, restaurants, and lobbies of 140 hotels and the dining rooms, kitchens, and toilets of 160 restaurants before and after an intervention. The intervention was a training course conducted by police officers followed by 3 monthly supervision visits by police officers. Compliance with smoke-free enviornment regulations was observed and assessed to generate a compliance score for each location and overall. Tobit regression was used to examine the relationship between compliance scores and the intervention and other variables such as hotel and restaurant characteristics. Results: Before the intervention, the highest compliance rates were found for “no tobacco advertisement” and “no cigarette selling” regulations (95%-100%) in almost all sites in hotels and restaurants. The lowest compliance rates were found for “having nonsmoking signs.” The rate of compliance with all regulations was only 5% for hotels and 0.06% of restaurants. Improvement after intervention was clearly observed, in the rate of compliance with all regulations by more hotels (15.7%) and overall compliance scores of hotels and restaurants. Conclusions: The intervention with participation of the police officers proved to be effective in improving compliance with smoke-free regulations. It is recommended to continue this intervention in the same areas as well as to expand the intervention to other areas.

Abstract: This work reported the successful synthesis of ilmenite-spinel (1 − x )NiTiO 3 - x MnFe 2 O 4 ( x = 0, 0.05 and 0.10) composites by a simple sol-gel method. Phase formation of composites was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. All the synthesized samples formed diphasic ilmenite-ferrite composites without any trace of impurity or intermediate phase. The optical properties of synthesized composites were characterized by diffuse reflectance UV–visible spectroscopy. MnFe 2 O 4 phase modified the optical band gap of NiTiO 3 material and shifted its optical bandgap value toward lower energy. Ferroelectric and magnetic hysteresis loops were investigated at room temperature. The hysteresis loops indicated the typical ferromagnetic and ferroelectric nature of all composites at room temperature. In P-E loops, the remanent polarization ( P r ) and saturation polarization ( P s ) showed a slight increase in the sample with 5% MnFe 2 O 4 phase addition. However, the lossy P-E loop was observed in the sample with the addition of 10% MnFe 2 O 4 . The presence of ferrite MnFe 2 O 4 phase in NiTiO 3 material enhanced the magnetic properties of NiTiO 3 at room temperature. The M-H loops of NiTiO 3 -MnFe 2 O 4 composites presented a ferromagnetic behavior with a dramatic increase in saturation magnetization with an increase of ferrite phase addition.

Abstract: Today, the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing rapidly on global. This disease is shown with many complications that significantly affect public health. One of them is kidney complications, which have a high incidence among diabetic patients in Vietnam (25.6-33.1%). Age, history of hypertension, and dyslipidemia are considered to be the main risk factors for diabetic nephropathy. Thus, early detection of these factors for kidney damage is significant for diagnosing, monitoring, treatment, and prognosis of diabetic patients. Our descriptive, cross-sectional study conducting on 120 diabetic patients at E Hospital has observed that blood cholesterol levels, HbA1c levels were independently related to eGFR decline below 60 mL/min/1.73m2.
