Abstract: This article discusses a seminar held by the Society for Sustainable Living where the Governmental Council for Sustainable Development (RVUR) was introduced. The panelists delivered presentations where they introduced both the previous activities of the Council and its recent reconstitution and vision for the future. In subsequent debate discussed sustainable development and its relevance within the Czech Republic & abroad, as well as recent RVUR activities and plans. Discussion focused e.g. on the institutional basis of the RVUR, the issue of the development of a prognosis and strategies, and education for sustainable development.

Abstract: The expansion of open educational resources (OER) in documents and practice at various levels is related to, among other things, the options these resources offer for the study, sharing, and possibly joint creation of information materials. This has important implications for the knowledge economy, but also the ways of its production and reproduction in education. The article introduces the concept of OER from a legislative perspective (copyright issues), its role in global commitments to sustainable development and particularly in relation to the teaching/learning methods and approaches in the process of their current transformation; the innovative potential of OER for the multidisciplinary field of environment and sustainable development is highlighted. A brief overview of the types of OER which are available in the Czech Republic for the study of environmental and sustainability fields is provided, and qualitative methods of analysis are used to develop a set of criteria through which the quality of the resource can be easily assessed. Different types of OER are evaluated according to these criteria and the overall character of the information environment available to university students is discussed. This brief overview is concluded by underlining significant opportunities of OER particularly in the environment and sustainability oriented disciplines owing to the multidisciplinary nature of these fields. These opportunities, however, are not fully exploited especially because the quality of these resources available on the internet is difficult to assess. Another issue is also the possibility that students themselves are not skilled in distinguishing the quality of resources, and perhaps the reluctance of university teachers to encourage and support students in applying consistent ethical standards in their use of materials in their studies.

Abstract: The article analyzes the current state and possibilities offered by the use of the open educational resources (OER) within the educational process on the university level, focusing on the situation at Charles University. First, the issue of OER is discussed in the context of higher education and OER quality assessment. Subsequently, the results of thematic research carried out within Charles University focused on mapping these sources and analysis of selected aspects of their quality are presented. The results show that the main open educational resources used in Charles University are wiki systems. The best functioning wiki system, which also has a sophisticated quality assurance system, is “WikiSkripta”. The authors also suggest that the existing criteria for the quality of educational resources need to be modified in an open environment and the new ones, those that reflect specific properties of these resources, especially their fluid, time-varying nature, should be added.

Abstract: Wikipedia is important in higher education because students and scholars often use it. Nevertheless, the issue of Wikipedia’s quality is an obstacle for its use at the higher education level. In order to contribute to this discussion, we have proposed ‘Verifiability by respected sources’ as an indicator for assessing the quality of Wikipedia articles at the higher education level and conducted an analysis of the most frequently visited articles in the category of Environment on Wikipedia. Results show that these articles contain many unreferenced statements, so their usage at the higher education level is problematic. Therefore, we also propose specific steps for relevant actors that could help to improve the quality of Wikipedia.

Abstract: Open educational resources are important innovations in educational technologies. Their proper use can have a number of benefits for both higher education and environmental disciplines. Conversely, poor work when using these resources can have a negative impact on students' knowledge. It is currently unclear what OER students use, how often and for what they use it, and whether they are able to determine any criteria of quality. On the basis of previous findings, we developed a method, and conducted research in the form of a questionnaire-based survey. We investigated a) the frequency of use b) the purposes of use c) subjective quality assessment. Questionnaires were distributed in the environmental courses at five universities in the Czech Republic; 233 questionnaires were evaluated. The results showed that most students use OER often, especially Wikipedia, both its Czech and English versions, although many of the students also have experience with the storage of illegal materials. Resources are especially used as a supplement and secondary resource, as a signpost to other resources, to prepare for a test, or when writing an attestation work. As a quality resource, students especially value Wikipedia. Most students were also able to identify at least some criteria which they use when assessing the quality of a resource.
