Abstract: The genus Atractus includes 146 species of cryptozoic snakes occurring from Panama to northeastern Argentina. Here, a molecular phylogeny of this genus is presented, which encompasses 29% (= 42; six are included here for the first time) of the species currently recognized. Morphological and phylogenetic support is found for three new species of ground snakes, which are described here based on their unique combination of molecular, meristic, and color pattern characteristics. The name A. arangoi Prado, 1939 is revalidated for a Colombian snake species previously subsumed under A. major Boulenger, 1894 based on new material collected in Ecuador. Reidentifications are provided for Atractus voucher specimens and sequences deposited in GenBank. With these changes, the number of Atractus reported in Ecuador increases from 27 to 31 species. Finally, attention is given to the importance of using a biogeographical framework that includes molecular data and a comprehensive geographic sampling when proposing species limits in complex taxonomic groups.

Abstract: Clutch size (CS) and relative clutch mass (RCM) are considered important features in life history descriptions of species within Squamata. Variations in these two characteristics are caused by both biotic and abiotic factors. The present study provides the first account related to CS and RCM of Basiliscus vittatus in Mexico within a population that inhabits an open riverbed juxtapositioned to tropical rainforest habitat in Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico (170 m a.s.l.). Twenty-nine gravid females were collected and kept in captivity under favorable conditions that promote oviposition. The CS within this population was 6.2 ± 0.2 and was correlated positively with snout vent-length (SVL); while the RCM was 0.17 ± 0.006 and was correlated positively with both CS and width of egg. Factors, such as female morphology and environmental conditions, should influence these reproductive traits in B. vittatus . The data collected in this study could provide a framework for comparisons of the life history traits across populations of B. vittatus in Mexico and within other species of the family Corytophanidae and provide a model for testing how abiotic and biotic factors may influence the CS and RCM in basilisk lizards throughout their range.

Abstract: The school sector still faces difficulties in enforcing adequate solid waste management. To address this issue, this study investigated the level of awareness and practices on solid waste management among intermediate elementary pupils. To do so, this study employed the quantitative research design using descriptive and correlational methods. Using stratified random sampling, primary data were gathered through the use of printed survey questionnaires addressed to one hundred eighty-six (186) respondents who are intermediate elementary pupils. In addressing the hypotheses of the study, correlation analysis using Spearman’s RHO test was used. The data showed high levels of awareness, particularly regarding environmental care and resource utilization. The practices were rated high, with segregation being very high. The Spearman rho correlation showed a moderately positive association between awareness and waste management practices. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended creating a school symposium on solid waste management and core values, implementing a “Basura Mo, Pagkakitaan Mo” program for proper disposal, and conducting a comparative study on the difference of performance between males and females in terms of awareness and practices on solid waste management. Abstract: The high number of defective parts and constant claims from the consumer market, are some problems that the Ecuadorian metal-mechanic industry must face in the production of a variety of pieces, metal items and capital goods. The objective of this research is to propose an alternative to increase the quality of the products and reduce the defects in the production of metal parts, manufactured in the metal-mechanic industry, through the appropriate application of an electrostatic powder paint coating in the polymerization process. A diagnosis of the problems in the painting process was made and the defects in the metal parts caused by a poor control of the main variables in this process were evaluated. In addition, some aspects were experimentally tested: the effect of the temperature at which the painted parts are exposed with electrostatic powder paint, the polymerization time of the pieces remaining inside the furnace and the thickness of the applied painting layer. The results showed that the thickness of the electrostatic painting layer applied to the metal parts at different exposure times and polymerization temperatures have a considerable impact on the quality and finish of the parts for their acceptance, use and durability.

Abstract: Behavior analysis of the neutron point kinetic model with Caputo and conformable derivatives (Khalil and Almeida operators) was performed. Hence, boundary thresholds that delimit the stability/instability zones within the anomalous diffusion exponent-reactivity parameter space were found. Stability criteria are established to limit the region of the values of the anomalous diffusion coefficient and reactivity parameters with which the oscillatory behavior of the neutron density does not exceed a value greater than 30% with respect to the value of the classical model. The parameter space map corresponding to the model with Caputo derivative shows a larger stability behavior zone than that obtained with the Khalil derivative defined in terms of a linear kernel. In a more general sense, the Almeida operator allows one to freely define the kernel function. A kernel of exponential type produces instabilities of different nature (significant increase in neutron density followed by a series of decreasing oscillations few moments after the start-up, or a rapid growth in neutron density resembling a Gaussian pulse appearing seconds after the start-up), as well as stability/instability zones of different shapes and sizes as the parameters in the kernel vary. Interestingly, it was possible to reduce the instability behavior zone with the exponential kernel and approximate its size with that of the zone predicted with the Caputo derivative.
