Abstract: Introduction: The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that in April 2020, screening tests for breast cancer decreased by 87% and 84% for cervical cancer, compared to the averages of the previous 5-year for the same month. In response to this finding, the Puerto Rico Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Program (PR-BCCPEDP), in collaboration with the Cooperative Extension Program (CEP), implemented an educational intervention of breast and cervical cancer in the northeast region of the island. The intervention aimed to reinforce knowledge in the early detection of breast and cervical cancer, increase screening tests, and reach out to women without health insurance who may qualify for the Program. Methodology: Since 2017, the PR-BCCPEDP agreed with the CEP to implement educational interventions for breast and cervical cancer in 4 of CEP's regions throughout the island. From February to May 2021, seven CEP Family and Consumer Educators (EFC) carried out 8 educational activities with 182 participants in the island's northeast region. We collected age, town of residence, level of education, health insurance, breast and cervical cancer screening history, and the reasons for not having performed screening tests according to the recommended guidelines. The educational activities were performed virtually through an educational PowerPoint and face-to-face using flip charts. The topics included breast and cervical cancer statistics, risk factors, symptoms, early detection guidelines, myths and facts, and barriers to not having screening tests. Participants that didn't have the screening tests according to the recommended guidelines had follow-up calls. Results: A total of 182 women participated in the intervention, with an average age of 47 years; most participants had a high school degree (42%), and 59% had the government's health plan. Regarding screening tests, 35.1% reported that they had not had a mammogram in the last two years, 73.4% authorized to be contacted after the intervention. Similarly, Pap tests, 30.7% reported that they had not had a Pap test in the last three years, of which 87.5% authorized to be contacted. Of the participants who had not had a mammogram (35.1%) or Pap test (30.7%), the main reason was the COVID-19 Pandemic (22.9% and 21.8%, respectively). Regarding the participants referred to the PR-BCCPEDP, 3.6% of the women without health insurance were referred to the Program and of these, 50% were recruited. Conclusion: Despite security, restrictions from the Pandemic, collaborations with community-based programs helped to reach a greater number of women to provide education and awareness about breast and cervical cancer. In terms of breast and cervical cancer screening, more than a third of the participants had not had their mammogram or Pap done due to the Pandemic. Women were recruited for the Program; however, additional efforts are necessary in order to reach a higher number of uninsured women. Abstract: Introduction: In 2015, according to the Puerto Rico Central Cancer registry (PRCCR), 2,188 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and 432 women died from this disease. The BRFSS by 2016, reported there still are 20% (1 in 5) of women in Puerto Rico aged ≥40 year who are not in compliance with current breast cancer screening guidelines. For that reason, is necessary to continue effective education efforts to increase breast cancer screening in the women population. For this purpose, the Puerto Rico Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (PRBCCEDP) in collaboration with Cooperative Extension Services (CES) developed a pilot project to evaluate a breast cancer flipchart to know if this tool could help to increase the knowledge on breast cancer. Method: The PRBCCEDP established collaboration with the Cooperative Extension Services (CES) to develop and implement a group educational intervention using a Breast Cancer Flipchart to address breast cancer burden, risk factors, and other information. This pilot project included the participation of 10 Family and Consumer Educators (FCE’s) in the north area of Puerto Rico. A total of 148 women participated in 11 educational activities and 114 completed a pre- and post-test and an evaluation of the activity. Descriptive and quantitative data analysis were made using SPSS (version 23). Results: The pilot project results are the following: the participants were mostly women (96.3%) with an average age of 53 years and 43% had completed high-school. Forty-two percent of participants were covered by the Government Health Plan, and only 68% have had a mammogram in the last two years. The majority of the participants (90%) rated as good the time assigned to the activity, the content of the educational activity, and the language level used on the flipchart. Moreover, 85% of the participants rated as good the visuals used and the flipchart. In addition., the 90% of the participants totally agreed that the activity: Increased their knowledge of breast cancer, risk factors and recommended screening guidelines, motivated them to visit the doctor to talk about mammography and breast cancer, and to talk with their family and friends about of breast cancer. There was a significant increase in knowledge (p & lt;0.05) in the post test in five of the six questions compared to the pre-test. Conclusion: This project demonstrates the effectiveness of a group educational intervention, utilizing a flipchart, to increase breast cancer knowledge among the Puerto Rican women. This tool could be helpful for FCE’s conducting educational activities in settings without technological resources. These efforts helped to include the breast cancer flipchart educational activity in an educational module entitled Promoting Healthy Lifestyles. In 2019, CES successfully implemented this educational intervention in the northern and southern regions of the island with the participation of 30 FCE’s.

Abstract: The present investigation is centered on the study of the growth curves of E. coli and C. xerosis bacteria in the presence of nanosize particles of Zinc Oxide. Previous works demonstrated the sensitivity of the bacteria, when these were reproduced in media that contain nanoparticles of luminescent silicon and Cobalt Ferrite. Doped ZnO nanocrystals were synthesized by conventional precipitation in ethanol solutions as reported by Spanhel and Anderson for bare ZnO. In our case, the syntheses were carried out under room-temperature conditions. The experimental results of E. coli bacteria in contact with a stable suspension of nanoparticles of Zinc Oxide, shows a growth curve without adaptation period. Moreover a short and slowly logarithmic stage has been observed, reaching the stationary stage after approximately four hours compared with one in absence of the nanoparticles (standard curve). During the observations, a change in the lifetime of the bacteria (metabolism) with particulate was noticed,as well as the beginning of the mortality stage. However, different results were recorded for silicon and ferrite. For the case of the bacteria C. xerosis , the curve with particles is above its standard curve, for all times with none of the oscillations which occured in the nanometer silicon. For these bacteria the beginning of the mortality stage is observed when they have particles. For both bacteria with Zinc Oxide nanoparticles this occurs approximately after nine hours.
