Abstract:
Effects of life events and temperament, personality traits in patients with acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack ABSTRACT AIM: Acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack develops due to impaired cerebral blood flow caused by vascular damage. Although various genetic and environmental causes are responsible for the development of stroke, it has been determined that psychological factors may also play a role in the studies. In this study, it is aimed to investigate whether personality traits, temperament and past life events are related to stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 48 patients with a National Institues Of Healt Stroke Scale scores below 10, non- aphasic, without dementia and other cognitive impairments and 47 patients with age and gender matched control groups. Sociodemographic data form, Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire, Temperament and Character Inventory and Life Events Scales were applied to the patient and control groups. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between stroke patients and healthy individuals in the control group in terms of Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego Autoquestionnaire scale, depressive temperament, irritable temperament and anxious temperament subscale scores. There was no difference between the study groups in terms of the distress and adjustment subscale scores of the Life Event Scale. In the Temperament and Character Inventory scoring, significant difference was found between two group in terms of seeking innovation, avoiding harm, persistence, self-directedness, and cooperation. CONCLUSİON: It has been determined that stroke patients have temperament and characteristics that are prone to depression. This study is the first study to evaluate the distress and harmony of patients who have had a stroke in our country against their temperament and character characteristics and life events.
