Abstract: PhilodendronsubgenusMeconostigma has been a well-circumscribed group since 1829. Members of this group are easily distinguished by diagnostic morphological characters as well as by a distinct ecology and geographical distribution. Based on molecular, morphological and cytological evidence, we propose the recognition of P.subg.Meconostigma as a distinct genus, Thaumatophyllum Schott. We also present the necessary new combinations, an emended key and some nomenclatural and taxonomic corrections regarding 21 names of Thaumatophyllum .

Abstract: During a floristic survey of the family Araceae in a sedimentary coastal plain in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, we found an unknown species with an intriguing combination of characteristics intermediate among Anthurium harrisii, A. intermedium, A. jilekii, A. riodocense and A. zeneidae . Herein, we describe and illustrate this novelity as Anthurium viridivinosum with a comparative analysis of characters that distinguishes it from similar species, and comments about its ecology, distribution and conservation.

Abstract: Utricularia breviscapa C.Wright ex Griseb. belongs to the Lentibulariaceae, a family of carnivorous plants with many aquatic species. We report a new record of U. breviscapa in a perennial wetland along the S & atilde;o Jo & atilde;o River, in a Lowland Forest within the Atlantic Forest biome. This is the first record of this species from the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Utricularia breviscapa differs from the its aquatic congeners in South America by the presence of a whorl of 3 & ndash;7 basally connate cylindrical floats at the base of the floral scape, and by the primary and secondary leaf-segments arranged into groups of threes.

Abstract: The genus Philodendron Schott comprises the following three currently accepted subgenenera: P. subg. Philodendron, P. subg. Pteromischum and P. subg. Meconostigma; however, these lack a well-defined classification. In the present study, we examined anatomically samples of adventitious roots in species of the group, so as to establish aspects relevant for taxonomic purposes. The anatomical analyses emphasised the characteristics of the steles in cross-sections of the root samples from regions near the apex to the most mature zones. A species of a closely related genus Adelonema, namely A. crinipes, was included in the study to clarify the results. Our results indicated notable differences in the species of the subgenus Meconostigma, mainly in terms of the presence (and variations) of a lobed stele, whereas the cylindrical stele stood out among the common characteristics in P. subg. Philodendron, P. subg. Pteromischum and the related species A. crinipes. Moreover, the characteristics shared by P. subg. Philodendron and P. subg. Pteromischum corroborated the phylogenetic hypothesis that these two taxa were more closely related to one another than to P. subg. Meconostigma.

Abstract: Araceae comprises a diverse group of plants that grow in various habitats, ranging from submerged aquatics to lithophytes. Thus, aroids are likely to show diverse glands acting in several plant–environment interactions, including colleters that protect young shoots. Based on this premise and the lack of studies regarding secretory structures in Araceae, we employed standard light and electron microscopy methods to test the hypothesis that colleters are present in Anthurium. Our main goals were to identify mucilage glands in A. andraeanum by conducting a detailed anatomical study of their structure, ultrastructure, and secretory activity. We found finger-like colleters in the apex of young leaves, spathes, and unexpanded cataphylls as well as secreting zones at the apex of expanded cataphylls, at the margins of non-fused cataphylls, and throughout the keels in two-keeled cataphylls. The colleters develop precociously and senesce shortly afterwards. Ultrastructural data and histochemistry confirmed the production of a polysaccharide-rich secretion that fills the spaces within the developing shoot. As far we know, this is the first time that colleters have been reported for Araceae. The functional roles of the secretion and the position of finger-like colleters concerning the ‘precursor tip’ of monocotyledons are discussed. Future research correlating secretory activity in colleters of species from different habitats might reveal a great diversity of mucilage glands with ecological and evolutionary significance to the family.

Abstract: Philodendron subg. Pteromischum is one of the three Philodendron subgenera and most diverse within Amazonia. It can be recognised by anisophyllous sympodial growth, long sheaths, short petiole, gynoecia with broad shallow compitum, and numerous ovules per locule. The taxonomic revision for Brazilian extra-Amazonian species was based on the analysis of 590 herbaria specimens. Nine Brazilian extra-Amazonian Pteromischum species were recognized, five names previously recognised for the studied area were treated as synonyms. All the species were described and mapped. An identification key and comments on taxonomy, nomenclature, conservation, phenology were provided for each species. The concepts of leaf-sheath and petiole are also clarified.

Abstract: Inventories of Pucciniales in areas of Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and the Amazon forest were carried out to fill the knowledge gap about this order and update the hosts and geographic distribution of the recorded species. After the analysis of 424 samples of plants infected with Pucciniales, we identified 122 species distributed in 37 (anamorphic and teleomorphic) genera parasitizing host plants of 101 genera of 43 botanical families. This study is the first to present results of inventories at national level and gathers information about 15% of the total number of Pucciniales registered in Brazil. The Atlantic Forest had the largest number of species of Pucciniales (63), followed by Cerrado (60) and the Amazon forest (31). The three biomes showed unique mycobiotas. We present new occurrences of species for Brazil, for the regions of the Amazon Forest, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, and for the local areas studied. The results also increase the number of hosts of previously registered rust fungi.
