Abstract:
A lo largo de los trópicos, los bosques secundarios en regeneración ocupan vastas áreas previamente taladas para actividades agrícolas y ganaderas. Sin embargo, a pesar de la importancia de la regeneración de los bosques para mitigar las consecuencias negativas causadas por la pérdida y fragmentación de los bosques en la biodiversidad, los estudios longitudinales sobre las respuestas filogenéticas de las especies a la regeneración de la matriz son escasos. Muestreamos murciélagos en bosque primario continuo, fragmentos de bosque primario y en la matriz con bosque secundario en regeneración en un experimento de fragmentación a escala de ecosistema en la Amazonia, aproximadamente 15 y 30 años después de la tala del bosque, para investigar cómo los cambios en la calidad de la matriz a través de la recuperación del bosque afectan la diversidad filogenética α y β . Encontramos que los cambios temporales en la riqueza filogenética α fueron más marcados en la matriz con bosque secundario que en los fragmentos de bosque y en el bosque continuo, evidenciando un aumento significativo en la historia evolutiva total a lo largo del tiempo. Sin embargo, cuando se tomaron en cuenta los efectos de la riqueza de especies, la estructura filogenética de cada conjunto se redujo casi a cero, lo que evidencia un patrón aleatorio de linajes en todos los tipos de hábitats. Las diferencias temporales en la diversidad filogenética β fueron impulsadas principalmente por el reemplazo β en el bosque secundario y el bosque continuo aproximadamente 30 años después de la tala del bosque. Estos dos hábitats también se agruparon en términos de riqueza β , lo que indica niveles similares de herencia evolutiva. En consecuencia, la regeneración del bosque secundario mostró una reducción en la probabilidad de extinción de linajes a lo largo del tiempo. Síntesis y aplicaciones . Aproximadamente 30 años de regeneración del bosque secundario fueron suficientes para que la riqueza filogenética se recuperara a niveles similares a los observados en el bosque continuo. Promover la sucesión de bosques en tierras degradadas mediante una combinación de restauración natural y activa, al mismo tiempo que se garantiza la protección a largo plazo de los bosques secundarios, independientemente de su edad, es de importancia clave para la conservación de la diversidad de murciélagos tropicales y sus servicios ecosistémicos asociados. Tales medidas de restauración estimularían la recolonización de fragmentos y hábitats de matriz por especies de murciélagos evolutivamente distintas, salvaguardando conjuntos filogenéticamente diversos y funciones ecológicas. Nuestro estudio sugiere que se debe fomentar la restauración de bosques en áreas tropicales degradadas y que los bosques secundarios deben ser protegidos por ley, especialmente en ecosistemas rurales con alta cobertura forestal primaria y en los alrededores de áreas protegidas.
