Abstract:
Members of open drug-scenes are affected by various social and health risks. The study analyses the spread of substances and related consumption patterns in Bremen’s drug scene as well as concomitant problems, risks and requirements for help. Methods Within this qualitative study, 50 participant observations in four city districts in Bremen, 36 problem-centered interviews with drug users and 8 expert interviews with social workers engaged in the care for homeless and the drug help system were conducted. Results The physical, mental and social situation of members of Bremen’s drug scene is characterized by severe risks and burdens. Crack use, which was previously limited to a few German cities, is now well-established in Bremen too. The interviewees address interventions for risk reduction and low threshold services that could improve the local drug help system. Conclusion Bremen’s drug help system should be developed by, for example, extending the opening hours of addiction care facilities, expanding psychosocial support, and setting up/installing a diamorphine (heroin) ambulance.
