Abstract: The issue of academic mobility based on analysis of documents and biographies of Spanish students at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century as an important component of educational process of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has been studied. The purpose of the study was to investigate why Spanish students found themselves in the University, circumstances of their apprenticeship and stay there, as well as specifics of their everyday life in Kyiv. It has been found out that despite the seclusion of the Soviet society, students from capitalist countries, in particular Spain, were studying at the University of Kyiv. Background of such phenomenon is analyzed and assumptions are made as to why this became possible, as well as the ways how Spanish students could enter the University are described. In particular, based on available documents in the University’s archive, it has been brought to light, that all Spanish citizens who studied at the University of Kyiv, were guided by both ideological and material needs, expressed their wish to come to the USSR for study and carried it out with a help of the Union of Soviet Friendship Societies and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries. The most popular specialties that Spanish students aspired to acquire were identified, such as Russian philology, philosophy, economics, and law. With a disruption of former communication models in the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, new ones based on students exchange have been established according to cooperation agreements signed between universities. As of the beginning of the 21stcentury there is information about internship of Spanish students and postgraduate students for a certain time, however unfortunately there is no possibility to study their personal files. The University of Kyiv is confirmed to have long traditions of academic mobility, which history assumes further development prospects.

Abstract: The strong support of the United States during the Russian war against Ukraine highlights the significant scholarly problem of the comprehensive study of American history (particularly foreign policy), culture, and US-Ukrainian relations. The mentioned directions define the activities of the educational program «American and European Studies (with the advanced program of foreign languages)» of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries at the Faculty of History of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. In January 2023, the Department held the second All-Ukrainian scientific conference «USA: Politics, Society, Culture,» dedicated to various aspects of the social, political, and cultural development of the United States of America. The conference took place online on the «Zoom» platform. It was primarily aimed at the participation of young researchers – students and graduate students who study the history, politics, society, and culture of the United States. At the same time, more experienced Americanists also participated, presenting their latest research developments. The main keynote speech at the plenary session was delivered by Valeriy Prystaiko, The main keynote speech at the plenary session was delivered by Valeriy Prystaiko, the Chief Consultant of the Military Policy Division at the Center for Security Studies of the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NISS), Candidate of Sciences in public administration. His report was focused on specific aspects of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in the context of the full-scale war. The main work of the conference was organized into four sections: U.S. Foreign Policy and Relations with World States in the 21st Century; U.S. Foreign Policy and Relations with World States in the 20th Century; U.S. Foreign Policy Strategy; American Society and Culture. The conference materials have been published on the website of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Video recordings of the most interesting reports are also available on the Department’s YouTube channel «American, European, and Oriental Studies». The experience gained from the conference «USA: Politics, Society, Culture» convincingly demonstrates the importance of such scientific forums for the development of Ukrainian American studies, the engagement and professional growth of young Americanist researchers, and the expert discussion and exchange of experience between younger and older generations of Ukrainian Americanists. In our opinion, scientific and cultural diplomacy plays a crucial role in deepening mutual understanding and cooperation between the Ukrainian and American peoples, particularly in countering Russian aggression in Ukraine and rebuilding our state. Therefore, we hope for the continuation of the tradition of annual conferences and other events that will contribute to the development of Ukrainian American studies.

Abstract: The formation of the Problem laboratory of physical and chemical research of rocks of the Geological faculty (Institute of Geology) of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is closely related to the development of the geological branch of Ukraine. Many years of geochemical and petrophysical research on numerous and diverse geological objects laid the foundation for the formation of the scientific school "Applied petrogeochemistry and petrophysics of igneous rocks", under the leadership of prof. M.I.Tolstoy. The short article provides the main development milestones, the scientific and applied phasing of the Problem Laboratory, as well as an incomplete list of the achievements of the laboratory's employees and people related to it.

Abstract: In 2022, the Astronomical Observatory had 72 employees, including 51 full-time and 21 part-time workers, 40 scientists (11 doctors of science and 15 candidates of science), including 20 full-time and 20 part-time workers. During the year, 5 budget topics were implemented. Main scientific results. The observational data of the Tycho Brahe supernova remnant (SN 1572), which were obtained by the Chandra space X-ray observatory, were analyzed. According to the observation data, a residual map was created for different photon energy ranges, in particular for the thermal continuum (4.1–6.0 keV) and the Si (1.6–2.1 keV) and S (2.3–2.6 keV) lines. The modernization of the observation base in the village has begun. Foresters: purchased a new Moravian C4-16000 CCD camera with a block of light filters and UBVRI filters of the Johnson-Cousins photometric system for the AZT-8 telescope; an optical reducer, a block of narrow-band filters and design documentation for a block of wide-band filters for the AZT-14 telescope were developed and manufactured; on the basis of the purchased Celestron Advanced VX 11 telescope with GOTO system and CCD cameras of the Atik Infinity ATK0144 series, a mobile complex was created for observing the phenomena of star coverage by asteroids. Based on the results of the research, 3 monographs, one study guide, 74 scientific articles, and 47 reports at scientific conferences were published.

Abstract: In 1975, at the Astronomical Observatory of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, a magnetograph of the full vector of the SIBIZMIR design was installed and began to operate, and this initiated the creation of a new promising scientific direction at the observatory – the measurement of solar magnetic fields by both magnetographic and spectral-polarization methods. This article provides a brief chronology of the events in the first 5 years of the existence of the new direction, as well as the most important scientific results during this period. Вased on the experience of observations obtained at the Kyiv observatory, it was concluded that this magnetograph in the Kyiv’s astroclimate can not provide such scientifically valuable data as those magnetographs used in other observatories far outside large cities. In particular, although in Kyiv the sensitivity of measurements in the longitudinal magnetic field channel was quite high – about 5 G in the longitudinal field channel and 75 G in the transverse field channel, “noise” in the radial velocity channel reached 0.3 km/sec, which is about an order of magnitude higher than in the Crimea magnetograph. Another reason for the limited use of the magnetograph in the Kyiv observatory was that in the late 1970s significant problems with the calibration of magnetographic measurements became apparent, as a result of which such measurements in the areas of sunspots could have errors of 200–300%. However, in parallel with magnetographic research, spectral-polarization studies were also developed, and they allowed to obtain the most important results. In particular, the new data were obtained on the existence of magnetic fields with a strength of » 10 kG in active regions on the Sun, on the discreteness of the strengths in subtelescopic structures with very strong fields, as well as data on the significant suppression of turbulent motions in them. The corresponding conclusions were confirmed and detailed by new research in the following years.

Abstract: In the second five-year period of spectral studies of solar magnetic fields in Astronomical Observatory of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (1981-1986), a number of important and interesting scientific results were obtained, which mainly concern magnetic fields in solar flares and beyond. In particular, based on the analysis of the Echelle Zeeman spectrograms obtained at the observatory during the international FBS/SERF program, it was shown that the effect of the “magnetic transient” according to the data of the BBSO observatory probably has a non-magnetic nature. Also, “kilogauss” magnetic fields (1–3 kG) were discovered and previously studied in solar flares, more precisely, in the region of intense emission in strong FeI lines, which is formed in the upper photosphere and the temperature minimum zone. For a section of the photosphere of the active region without solar flares, observational evidences of the discreteness of local magnetic field intensities were obtained, which turned out to be equal to ≈ 4, 7 and 13 kG. For the same area, indications of the existence of a moderately strong (up to ~ 1 kG) background magnetic field of mixed polarity were found. It was possible to explain these observational data theoretically within the framework of the linear force-free MHD model, according to which the central parts of small-scale magnetic structures with strong and discrete fields are surrounded by concentric regions with a sign-changing and weaker magnetic field. In a solar flare, a sign-changing height gradient of the longitudinal magnetic field was discovered and investigated, one of the reasons for which may be a significant deformation of the magnetic field of the shear type, which gradually weakened towards the end of the flare. In all the above-mentioned questions, the “last word” has not yet been said – they require thorough research in the future.
