Abstract:
Between 1944 and 1948 France help almost one million German prisoners of war. The majority of these prisoners were used as labour in the postwar reconstruction of the country. This article examines their living conditions, their relationship with the civilian population and the administrative difficulties which German prisoners of war posed for the French authorities. These issues are explored in light of the changes which end of the war brought about, illustrating how the French government consolidated its restored authority at both a local and European level.
