Abstract: Species of the Asian genus Eotrechus Kirkaldy, 1902 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha, Gerridae, Eotrechinae) are atypical water striders because they live on the near-vertical rock surfaces of waterfalls. The taxonomy of the genus is revised and six new species are described: E. steineri sp. nov. , E. kerberos sp. nov. , E. thai sp. nov. , E. konkakinh sp. nov. , E. boukali sp. nov. , and E. anderseni sp. nov. Supplementary descriptions of the apterous female and macropterous male of E. fuscus Basu, Chandra & Venkatesan, 2017 are provided. Additional and updated distribution data of species of Eotrechus are reported. Eotrechus fuscus is reported from Myanmar for the first time; E. brevipes is reported from Nepal for the first time; E. hygropetricus Andersen, 1982 is reported from southern Thailand for the first time, which extends the southernmost limit of the known distribution of the genus. A revised key to the species of Eotrechus is also provided.

Abstract: A new species, Boholina reducta sp. nov. , was found in a brackish pool within an anchialine cave in Tra Ban Island in Bai Tu Long Bay, north Vietnam. The new species is clearly distinguished from all the six species currently known in the genus Boholina by the following unique characteristics: reduction of the septum between gonopores; narrow and pointed rostrum; basal segment of mandibular palp armed with three setae; maxillule without seta on the basal exite, and exopod with 11 setae; second and third endopodal segments of the maxilliped bearing three setae each; exopod of male right leg 5 2-segmented, with two strong and one vestigial spines on the outer margin of the distal segment; and last exopodal segment of female leg 5 bearing only one spine on the outer margin. We provide a description of the new species, along with detailed illustrations and scanning electron microscopy photographs. The identification key to Boholina species is updated as well. This is the first record of the genus Boholina from Vietnam.

Abstract: A new species of small tree frog is described from northwestern Vietnam based on morphological differences and molecular divergence. Gracixalus truongi sp. nov. is distinguishable from its congeners and other small rhacophorid species on the basis of a combination of the following characters: size relatively small, SVL 32.2–33.1 mm in males, 37.6–39.3 mm in females; head slightly wider than long; vomerine teeth absent; snout round and long RL/SVL 0.17–0.19 in males, 0.16–0.17 in females; spines on upper eyelid absent; supratympanic fold distinct; tympanum distinct; dorsal skin smooth; throat smooth and venter granular; tibiotarsal projection absent; webbing of fingers rudimentary, toes with moderately developed webbing; dorsum moss-green, with an inverse Y-shaped dark green marking extended from interorbital region to posterior region of dorsum; external vocal sac absent in males; males with a nuptial pad on finger I. In the molecular analyses, the new species has no clear sister taxon and is at least 4.5% divergent from other congeners based on a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene.

Abstract: In the last decade, invasive suckermouth armored catfish Pterygoplichthys spp. spread among many river systems of Vietnam. Extended distribution of armored catfish might be associated with using brackish water in estuaries for fish spread from one river system to another. The first goal of our study was to assess the occurrence of armored catfish in the estuary of the Da Rang River (Phu Yen Province, Vietnam) and their distribution depending on the horizontal salinity gradient (4–25 PSU). Fish were mainly caught by stationary bottom traps in water salinity from 4 PSU to 18 PSU. The second goal of our study was to experimentally evaluate the ability of armored catfish to move and breathe in seawater (33 PSU). Fish moved in horizontal and vertical planes after transfer into seawater during the first 15 minutes. Fish moved around less by the 13 th –15 th minutes in seawater. Armored catfish moved around more in seawater than in freshwater. The exposure to seawater for 6 minutes led to deterioration of fish breathing. The results of our field and experimental studies established that armored catfish are found and able to move in brackish waters but avoid high salinity water. These facts provide support for the hypothesis of armored catfish invasion through the estuaries and coastlines.

Abstract: Introduction. This study aimed at developing an HPLC-DAD method for simultaneous determination of eurycomanone (EU), epimedin C (EC) and icariin (IC) in EE tablets containing Radix Eurycomae longifoliae extract and Herba Epimedii extract (EE tablets). Methods. Several HPLC conditions (detection wavelength, mobile phase) and sample preparation conditions (type of solvent, ratios of tablet powder and solvent) were investigated. Results. The optimized HPLC condition employed a Shim-Pack RP18 column and a detection wavelength of 254 nm. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and water containing 0.1% H 3 PO 4 in gradient elution. The method was selective, linear, precise (RSD & lt; 2%) and accurate with recoveries in the range of 98.51–104.58% for EU, 96.22–104.80% for EC and 97.50–104.96% for IC. Conclusion. The method for simultaneous quantification of EU, EC and IC in EE tablets by HPLC – DAD was developed and validated for the first time and could be applied for quality control of EE tablets.

Abstract: A conjugated molecular triad based on pyrene and 9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene has been successfully synthesised via the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction with yield of 48%. In this polymerization, the Pd(PPh3)4 has been used as the catalytic in the presence of K2CO3 as base in a mixture of toluene/ethanol/H2O at 80oC under N2. The chemical structures of the conjugated molecules were determined via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) that proved the chemical structure of 1,1’-(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)dipyrene. The optical properties of the molecules were investigated via UV-Vis in different concentration that exhibited the maximum absorption of 340 nm. The conjugated molecular triad also have been investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy that showed a mission peak at 475 nm under the excitation of 350 nm of wavelength. In addition, the 1,1’-(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)dipyrene exhibited a fluorescence quenching as a chemosensor in the presence of mesotrione, a nitroaromatic herbicide. This phenomenon proved the efficient energy and electron transfer from a photo-excited pyrene moiety to the ground state electron-deficient mesotrione as a result of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism.

Abstract: A new species of Sterculia from Vietnam – S. konchurangensis – is described, illustrated, and compared with the similar S. lanceolata . S. konchurangensis differs from S. lanceolata by the length of the petiole (7.0–9.5 vs. 25–35 mm), shape of the leaf blade (obovate or elliptic vs. elliptic, lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate), length of the leaf blade (6–8 vs. 9–20 cm), and length of the calyx lobe (11–12.5 vs. 4–6 mm). A diagnostic key of the 22 Sterculia species occurring in Vietnam is also provided.

Abstract: Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is emerging as one of the most attractive two-dimensional (2D) materials amongst the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) group. MoS2 exhibits a thickness-dependent band gap that changes from indirect band gap of ~1.3 eV for bulk MoS2 to direct band gap of ~1.9 eV in monolayer form. Such indirect-to-direct gap transition due to quantum confi nement results in giant enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yield. Recent study demonstrated that the co-existence of 2H- and 1T-MoS2 synthesized by hydrothermal method exhibited superior electronic conductivity to those with 2H semiconducting phase. Metallic 1T phase of MoS2 is attracting much attention due to its high electronic conductivity and potential applications in supercapacitors, thermoelectric energy harvesting, and memristors. In this paper, we investigated a hybrid structure between 2H and 1T of MoS2 by a hydrothermal process and investigated its optical property via photoluminescence spectra with changes in pH values. Our results indicated that photoluminescence occurred in the visible light region and the band gap was determined to be ~1.96–2.50 eV. In addition, pH of the precursor solution strongly affected the fi nal structure of MoS2 nanocrystals, which in turn, affected their photoluminescence property wherein pH = 4–5 was identifi ed as optimum for 2H–1T-MoS2 synthesis.
