Abstract:
Die lombardische Romanik fällt besonders dadurch auf, dass sie aufgrund unterschiedlicher Materialtypen keine typologische und technische Einheitlichkeit kennt : Im alpinen und subalpinen Bereich herrscht die Verwendung des Hausteins vor, in der südlich gelegenen Ebene dagegen der Backstein (bis Ende des 11. Jh.). Ein neuer, genuin lombardischer Baustil entstand in einem weiter gefassten geographischen und kulturellen Rahmen, dem sogenannten «premier art roman » . Dieser architektonische Neuanfang hängt eng mit den von den Bischöfen unternommenen Reformbewegungen im Rahmen des ottonischen und salischen Reichskirchensystems zusammen, dessen herausragende Vertreter Aribert von Mailand und die reichstreuen Bischöfe von Brescia und Como waren. Vor der Mitte des 11. Jh. waren die Experimente von Santa Maria Maggiore in Lomello von entscheidender Bedeutung, ebenso die der Taufkapelle von Galliano und des Heiligen Grabes in Mailand, sowohl was die architektonische Konzeption, als auch die Baulösungen anbelangt (steinerne Gewölbe und Ausbildung von Jochen und Stützen). Leider sind zahlreiche Bauten der zweiten Hälfte des 11. Jh. verlorengegangen und wir sind nicht imstande, den Prozess zu verfolgen, der am Ende des Jahrhunderts zur Reife der Romanik führte, die mit der Entstehung der lombardischen Kommunen zusammenfällt. Die repräsentativsten Bauten wie Sant’Ambrogio in Mailand und San Michele Maggiore in Pavia fallen durch die Verbindung von Emporen und Stützenwechsel sowie durch gotische Kreuzrippengwölbe auf, während die Bauskulptur eine nie dagewesene Blüte erlebte. Gleichzeitig wurde die Kathedrale von Cremona begonnen, ein romanisches Bauwerk Norditaliens, das die meisten Probleme aufwirft, und das sich auf halbem Wege zwischen den Kathedralen der lombardischen Sphäre und den Kathedralen der mittleren Poebene befindet.
