Abstract:
Social support was found to affect post‐fracture recovery of frail older persons. However, few of these studies explored recovery beyond 6 months following hip fracture, and almost all studies viewed social support as a variable that did not change over time. During 2 years after hip‐fracture surgery, older persons with diabetes mellitus (DM) had four social‐support trajectories: poor and declining, moderate and stable, high but declining, and high and stable. Participants in the high and stable social‐support group had better health outcomes and less depressive symptoms than those in the poor and declining group. Social support for persons with DM should be continually assessed following hip‐fracture surgery and interventions provided to those with continuously low and declining social support.
