Abstract: Electroluminescent (EL) diode utilizing poly(methylphenylsilane) (PMPS) has been fabricated and its optical and electroluminescent characteristics have been investigated. We have succeeded in demonstrating ultraviolet emission at 353 nm from the PMPS EL diode for the first time.

Abstract: Pulse response of electroluminescent (EL) diode utilizing poly(3-alkylthiophene) mixed with fluorescent dye has been investigated. By mixing fluorescent dye with poly(3-alkylthiophene), the response time of EL emission became slow compared with that of undoped poly(3-alkylthiophene). The mechanism of the EL response in the fluorescent-dye-doped poly(3-alkylthiophene) is discussed in terms of hopping transport of electrons through 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole molecules.

Abstract: A multicolor organic electroluminescent (EL) device utilizing poly(9, 9-dihexylfluorene) (PDHF) and N, N'-bis(2, 5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-3, 4, 9, 10-perylenedicarboximide (BPPC) has been successfully realized. The multicolor EL device emits either blue green or red light depending on the polarity of applied voltage. Both emissions have comparable intensity at the same injection current. By driving with AC field both blue green and red emission can be observed.

Abstract: Electroluminescent (EL) properties of organic EL devices with a three-layer structure of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum) (Alq)-doped poly(2,5-dinonyloxy- p -phenylenevinylene) (NOPPV)/an aromatic diamine derivative/ poly(9,9-dihexylfluorene) (PDHF) have been studied. Their electroluminescence was blue for negative voltage on the PDHF side electrode, and varied from orange dominated by the emission from NO-PPV to green dominated by the emission from Alq as the positive voltage on the PDHF side electrode was increased. The mechanism of the multicolor emission is discussed in terms of an energy band diagram of the devices.

Abstract: An organic photocell, which has a multilayer structure consisting of poly(2,5-dioctyloxy- p -phenylenvinylene) (OOPPV)/octaethylporphine (OEP)/backminsterfullerene (C 60 ), has been fabricated. The photocurrent yield spectra are measured in terms of the light absorption in the OEP layer, the exciton migration and the charge generation at both organic heterojunctions. That is, the double heterojunctions OOPPV/OEP and OEP/C 60 contribute to the charge generation by excitonic dissociation. The mechanisms of charge generation and photocurrent enhancement are discussed taking the energy band structure and photoinduced charge transfer into consideration.

Abstract: Photoluminescence from organic superlattice structures with 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (Alq 3 ) and aromatic diamine (TPD) has been studied in terms of the excitation power density of third-harmonic-generation (THG) light from a Nd:YAG laser and the layer thickness of superlattice structures. The photoluminescence intensity from the Alq 3 layer is enhanced with decreasing layer thickness of TPD in a superlattice structure independent of the excitation power density. With increasing excitation power density, the photoluminescence intensity from the TPD layer is enhanced compared with that from Alq 3 . The mechanism of nonlinear photoluminescence emission from Alq 3 and TPD superlattice structures is discussed, taking the energy transfer and the interaction of excitons in the superlattice structure into consideration.

Abstract: Insertion of a thin film of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) at the interface of electrodes and organic layers has been investigated. Insertion of a thin film of Al 2 O 3 at the interface of the ITO anode and the diamine derivative (TPD) layers, as well as at the interface of the 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (Alq 3 ) and the Mg:Ag cathode in the electroluminescent (EL) diode has been examined. The insertion of an Al 2 O 3 layer with a proper thickness was observed to enhances the emission efficiency of the device. The mechanism of quantum efficiency enhancement of the device was studied.

Abstract: Photoluminescence from an organic multilayer structure utilizing 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum ( Alq 3 ) and aromatic diamine has been discussed in terms of the wavelength of the excitation light and the layer thickness. The photoluminescence intensity from Alq 3 layers is enhanced in the thinner multilayer structure compared with the thicker one as a result of efficient energy transfer at the heterointerfaces. The mechanism behind the increase of photoluminescence intensity in the organic multilayer structure is discussed.

Abstract: A superlattice structure electroluminescent diode consisting of alternating layers of organic cyclopentadiene derivative and aromatic diamine has been fabricated by organic molecular beam deposition. The electroluminescent spectrum of the diode depends on the layer thickness of cyclopentadiene derivative. The polarization anisotropy of the emission spectrum of the diode is also observed. The mechanism of emission anisotropy has been discussed in the superlattice structure.

Abstract: Electroluminescent (EL) diodes utilizing polysilanes have been fabricated, and their optical and electroluminescent characteristics have been investigated. We have succeeded in demonstrating electroluminescence from the ultraviolet region to the visible region using the EL diodes with thin polysilane films. The diode characteristics are discussed taking the polymer structure into consideration.
