Abstract: A promising way to improve the performance of luminescent materials is to combine them with noble metal nanoparticles. Herein, a set of silver/europium-doped lanthanum orthophosphate (Ag/La0.95Eu0.05PO4) nanostructures with different concentrations of silver nanoparticles were prepared and investigated. The presented overlap between the strongest europium (Eu3+) excitation line and the broad silver nanoparticle surface plasmon resonance makes the combination prospective for coupling. X-ray powder diffraction confirmed the monoclinic monazite structure. The transmission electron microscopy revealed particles with a rod-like shape and ~4 aspect ratio. Photoluminescence spectra show characteristic Eu3+ ion red emission. One of the requirements for an enhanced luminescence effect is the precise control of the distance between the noble metal nanoparticles and the emitter ion. The distance is indirectly varied throughout the change of Ag nanoparticle concentration in the La0.95Eu0.05PO4 host. The emission intensity increases with the increase in Ag nanoparticles up to 0.6 mol %, after which the luminescence decreases due to the nanoparticles’ close packing and aggregation leading to the displacement of La0.95Eu0.05PO4 from the vicinity of the metal particles and reabsorption of the emitted light. The emission intensity of La0.95Eu0.05PO4 increases more than three times when the Eu3+ excitation is supported by the localized surface plasmon resonance in the Ag/La0.95Eu0.05PO4 nanostructures.

Abstract: A series of La 1− x Ga 0.99 O 3 :Cr 0.01 , Nd x phosphors (where x = 0.005, 0.01, 0.02) for luminescence thermometry was synthesised by the solid-state method, structurally characterised using powder X-ray diffraction data, and investigated by ambient and variable-temperature optical measurements. The design principle relies on the use of a combination of transition metal and rare earth activator ions such that the excitation and emission wavelengths fall within the near infra-red spectral region, notably in the ‘first biological window’ that is attractive for potential in vivo applications. The photoluminescence spectra of the compounds feature the characteristic 2 E phosphorescence of Cr 3+ at 729 nm and the 4 F 3/2 → 4 I 9/2 emission of Nd 3+ around 890 nm. The Nd 3+ emission is quenched at a higher rate than that of Cr 3+ with increasing temperature. Thermometric analysis by monitoring the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) between the emissions of Cr 3+ and Nd 3+ from 300 K to 650 K shows a quasi-Boltzmann trend, with a maximum relative sensitivity of ∼2% K −1 , high absolute sensitivity values over this entire temperature range, excellent temperature resolution of 0.04 K at room temperature, and high stability.

Abstract: The Serbian Food Consumption Survey among 1–9-year-old-children was conceptualized and conducted in compliance with the principles, established protocols, and guidelines of the EU Menu project between 2017 and 2021. Valid data were collected for 576 individuals (290 1–3-year-old toddlers and 276 3–9-year-old children). Regardless of age and gender category, the majority (68.80%) of children had normal weights according to the Body Mass Index-for-age classification system. The median daily energy intake was 1406.71 kcal with no differences between the settlement types. The overall median contributions of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to the total energy intake were 47.54%, 14.06%, and 37.88%, respectively. The proportions of the macronutrient intake deviated from the dietary reference values with compliance to the recommendations being particularly poor for fat and fiber. The consumption of energy-dense food groups such as meat and meat products, fat and oil, sugar, and confections was more pronounced among older children. The survey results provide a valuable insight into the nutritional status and dietary habits of toddlers and children 1–9 years old living in Serbia. They may serve as an evidence platform for public health programs, a valuable asset for decision-makers, and a reliable reference to guide nutritional policies, diet monitoring, and interventions targeting this population group in the future.

Abstract: Gold-based complexes represent a new class of potential metallodrugs. Although their action mechanism is not entirely understood, it was shown that gold complexes inhibit some enzymes’ activities. Among them, Na,K-ATPase is emerging as an essential target for various anticancer drugs. The functionalization of nanoparticles by gold(III) complexes could facilitate their delivery into the cells and enable the following of their distribution in the target tissues. Objective: The paper presents an overview of Na,K-ATPase interaction with representative and structurally related cytotoxic gold(III) complexes. The results obtained by the employment of theoretical methods (DFT and docking studies) combined with the experimental approach involving a variety of nanotechnology-base techniques (UV/Vis, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy, CD, AFM, DLS) are discussed. Detailed information was obtained on the enzyme’s conformational and structural changes upon binding the gold(III) complexes. The experimentally determined reaction parameters (constants of dissociation and the reaction stoichiometry) were predicted theoretically. Conclusion: The presented results offer further support to the view that Na,K-ATPase may be a relevant biomolecular target for cytotoxic gold(III) compounds of medicinal interest.

Abstract: Opalized white tuff (OWT) with 40  μ m average particle size and 39.3 m 2 /g specific surface area has been introduced into polyisoprene rubber (NR). Their reinforcing effects were evaluated by comparisons with those from precipitated silica (PSi). The cure characteristic, apparent activation energy of cross-link ( E a c ) and reversion ( E a r ), and mechanical properties of a variety of composites based on these rubbers were studied. This was done using vulcanization techniques, mechanical testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that OWT can greatly improve the vulcanizing process by shortening the time of optimum cure ( t c 90 ) and the scorch time ( t s 2 ) of cross-linked rubber composites, which improves production efficiency and operational security. The rubber composites filled with 50 phr of OWT were found to have good mechanical and elastomeric properties. The tensile strengths of the NR/OWT composites are close to those of NR/PSi composites, but the tear strength and modulus are not as good as the corresponding properties of those containing precipitated silica. Morphology results revealed that the OWT is poorly dispersed in the rubber matrix. According to that, the lower interactions between OWT and polyisoprene rubber macromolecules are obtained, but similar mechanical properties of NR/OWT (100/50) rubber composites compared with NR/PSi (100/50) rubber composites are resulted.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes of color and fluorescence of resin based composite exposed to beer. Materials and Methods 84 samples (13 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick) of microhybrid composite Gradia Direct TM extra bleach white were immersed in 5 different beers (dark and light) or distilled water. Color and fluorescence were measured prior and after 1‐, 7‐, and 14‐day immersion by Spectrophotometer Thermo Evolution 600 and Fluorolog‐3‐221 spectrofluorometer. Results Resin based composites changed color after immersion in beers of different types. Beers with higher optical absorption induced greater color changes. The fluorescence intensity of composites was decreased after immersion in beer, but the shape of fluorescence spectra was not changed. 14‐day immersion in Bernard dark beer caused the greatest changes in optical properties of composite: Δ E *=9.0 and 57.6% reduced fluorescence. Conclusion Dark and light beers changed optical properties of resin based composite. The color change come exclusively from the change of chroma. Clinical Significance To fully meet esthetic criteria when using dental materials in restoration it is crucial to match optical properties of teeth and dental restoration at the moment of placement, but also to keep the match over the time. Considering that staining in beer causes changes in color and fluorescence of composites and that discoloration is a frequent reason for replacement of composite restorations, the data and conclusions on discoloration of dental restorations caused by beer consumption should aid dental professionals when reaching for high esthetics of modern dentistry.(J Esthet Restor Dent 28:330–338, 2016)

Abstract: Fatty acids (FAs) composition and desaturase activities can be altered in different metabolic conditions, but the adiposity-independent associations with clinical and biochemical indicators of cardiometabolic risk are still unclear. This study aimed to analyze the associations of FAs composition and estimated desaturase activities with anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical cardiometabolic risk indicators in non-diabetic Serbian women, and to investigate if these associations were independent of the level of adiposity and other confounders. Methods In 76 non-diabetic, otherwise healthy Serbian women, aged 24-68 years, with or without metabolic syndrome or obesity (BMI=23.6±5.6 kg/m2), FA composition in erythrocyte phospholipids was measured by gas-liquid chromatography. Desaturase activities were estimated from product/precursor FAs ratios (D9D:16:1n-7/16:0; D6D:20:3n-6/18:2n-6; D5D:20:4n-6/20:3n-6). Correlations were made with anthropometric, biochemical (serum glucose, triacylglycerols, LDL-C, HDL-C, ALT, AST, and their ratios) and clinical (blood pressure) indicators of cardiometabolic risk. Linear regression models were performed to test the independence of these associations. Results Estimated desaturase activities and certain FAs were associated with anthropometric, clinical and biochemical indicators of cardiometabolic risk: D9D, D6D, 16:1n-7 and 20:3n-6 were directly associated, while D5D and 18:0 were inversely associated. However, the associations with clinical and biochemical indicators were not independent of the associations with the level of adiposity, since they were lost after controlling for anthropometric indices. After controlling for multiple confounders (age, postmenopausal status, education, smoking, physical activity, dietary macronutrient intakes, use of supplements, alcohol consumption), the level of adiposity was the most significant predictor of desaturase activities and aforementioned FAs levels, and mediated their association with biochemical/clinical indicators. Vice versa , desaturase activities predicted the level of adiposity, but not other components of cardiometabolic risk (if the level of adiposity was accounted). While the associations of anthropometric indices with 16:1n-7, 20:3n-6, 18:0 and D9D and D6D activities were linear, the associations with D5D activity were the inverse U-shaped. The only adiposity-independent association of FAs profiles with the indicators of cardiometabolic risk was a positive association of 20:5n-3 with ALT/AST ratio, which requires further exploration. Discussion Additional studies are needed to explore the mechanisms of the observed associations.
