Abstract: Previously, seven species of the genus Isonychia Eaton, 1871 were reported in China, but they have never been systematically reviewed. After examining our collections from the Chinese mainland, six species and one additional subspecies have been recognized, compared, and photographed. Among them, I. kiangsinensis is redescribed in all stages and a neotype is designated. Its males have triangular penes and nymphs have three dark pigments on each gill. A synonym of I. guixiensis Wu et al., 1992 ( I. sinensis Wu et al., 1992) is confirmed. The males of this species have nearly cylindrical penes and clear abdominal markings. Finally, two species and one subspecies are recorded for the first time in China: I. ussurica sibirica Tiunova et al., 2004, I. ussurica ussurica Bajkova, 1970 and I. vshivkovae vshivkovae Tiunova et al., 2004. Together with the I. ignota (Walker, 1853), I. sexpetala Tiunova et al., 2004, I. formosana (Ulmer, 1912) and possible I. japonica (Ulmer, 1920), they show the rich diversity of the genus Isonychia in China.

Abstract: Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is described from the Pearl River basin in Hongguo Town, Panzhou City, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. Based on the presence of the long horn-like structure on the back of the head, Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is assigned to the Sinocyclocheilus angularis species group. Sinocyclocheilus longicornus sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of morphological characters: (1) presence of a single, relatively long horn-like structure on the back of the head; (2) pigmentation absent; (3) reduced eyes; (4) dorsal-fin rays, ii, 7; (5) pectoral-fin rays, i, 13; (6) anal-fin rays, iii, 5; (7) pelvic-fin rays, i, 7; (8) lateral line pores 38–49; (9) gill rakers well developed, nine on first gill arch; and (10) tip of adpressed pelvic fin not reaching anus.

Abstract: Two new species of freshwater crab of the genus Potamid Aparapotamon Dai & amp; Chen, 1985 are described from Yunnan Province, southwest China. Morphological comparisons were made between the two new species and type materials of other 11 species of Aparapotamon . Aparapotamon binchuanense sp. nov. and A. huizeense sp. nov. can be separated from their congeners by the shape of the epibranchial tooth, the frontal view of the cephalothorax, the male first gonopod, and the female vulvae. The molecular analyses based on partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene are also included. This study brings the number of Aparapotamon species to 13.

Abstract: Trichoderma isolates were collected from moist soils near a water source in different areas of China. ITS sequences were submitted to MIST (Multiloci Identification System for Trichoderma ) and meets the Trichoderma [ITS 76 ] standard. Combined analyses of phylogenetic analyses of both phylograms ( tef1 -α and rpb2 ) and morphological characteristics, revealed five new species of Trichoderma , namely Trichoderma hailarense , T. macrofasciculatum , T. nordicum , T. shangrilaense and T. vadicola . Phylogenetic analyses showed T. macrofasciculatum and T. shangrilaense belong to the Polysporum clade, T. hailarense , while T. nordicum and T. vadicola belong to the Viride clade. Each new taxon formed a distinct clade in phylogenetic analysis and have unique sequences of tef1 -α and rpb2 that meet the Trichoderma new species standard. The conidiation of T. macrofasciculatum typically appeared in white pustules in concentric rings on PDA or MEA and its conidia had one or few distinctly verrucose. Conidiophores of T. shangrilaense are short and rarely branched, phialides usually curved and irregularly disposed. The aerial mycelium of T. hailarense and T. vadicola formed strands to floccose mat, conidiation tardy and scattered in tufts, conidiophores repeatedly rebranching in dendriform structure. The phialides of T. nordicum lageniform are curved on PDA and its conidia are globose to obovoidal and large.

Abstract: A new species of Mediapotamon Türkay & amp; Dai, 1997 from a karst system in southwest China is described. The new species can be separated from congeners by the combination of a sharp and distinct epibranchial tooth, the anterolateral region lined with few scattered granules, the terminal segment of the male first gonopod distinctly bent with a constant diameter, and the position of the female vulvae. Mitochondrial 16S rDNA genetic data was used to investigate the systematic position of the new species, which is supported as a new taxon.

Abstract: The previously reported begonias in a limestone forest of Guangxi mainly belong to Begonia sect. Coelocentrum Irmscher. In this article, we described and illustrated a new species in sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC., Begonia parvibracteata X.X.Feng, R.K.Li & Z.X.Liu, which was discovered in a karst forest of south-western Guangxi. The begonia shows high morphological similarity to B. subhowii S.H. Huang and B. psilophylla Irmscher, but differs from the latter two in its narrower oblique-ovate asymmetric leaf blade, 4 (occasionally 6) tepals of pistillate flower and smaller membranous inflorescence bracts. Molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on ITS sequence data, supports the new species as monophyletic and distinct from B. subhowii and B. psilophylla . Considering its narrow distribution and the disturbance of human activities, the conservation status of new taxon is evaluated as “Vulnerable” (VU B1, B2 ab (i, iv, v), D2) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract: Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli . Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals 〈 1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.
