Abstract:
As he crossed eastern Anatolia, Xenophon marched through territory that had previously been dominated by the distinctive and powerful kingdom of Urartu, of which he apparently knew nothing. Three hypotheses are advance to explain why Urartu had disappeared so completely : 1) Urartian architecture had characteristics which, over time, made it indistinguishable from the landscape ; 2) the kingdom had no direct opportunity to pass on its legacy to another centralized power ; and 3) the cultural elements that we regard as distinctively Urartian specifically linked to a government, and culturally superficial.
