Content: From 2017 to 2018, to prevent the accumulating financial risks, the Chinese government used strict financial regulation and tight monetary policy to constrain the growth of the banking innovative businesses. It seems that there is no target conflict, however, the above policies resulted in a sharp drop of M2 growth, which drag down the economy growth further. I call this phenomenon as policy overshooting. I find the policy overshooting mechanism can be explained by money multiplier theory: Because there is a high required reserve ratio (RRR) for traditional deposit while none for innovative deposit, hence strict financial regulation will decrease the money multiplier growth. Combine with the decline in monetary base growth derive from the tight monetary policy, will lead to a sharp drop of M2 growth. To test this hypothesis, I calculate the exogenous monetary base growth and the correspondent real money multiplier growth. The former measures the monetary policy stance of the People's Bank of China accurately. To solve the overshooting problem, I propose a new policy tool called differential reserve ratio based on money creation mechanism (DRRMCM), which set a low RRR on traditional deposit while a high RRR on innovative deposit. Then strict financial regulation will increase the money multiplier growth to offset the decline in monetary base growth due to the tight monetary policy. I call this phenomenon as policy coordination. At last, I give a discussion about how to use DRRMCM in practice

Content: Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), one of the latest discoveries to the nitrogen cycle has been a very active focal research area on biochemistry, ecophysiology and ecology. Anammox biochemical process, the oxidation of ammonium with nitrite as electron acceptor under anoxic conditions, is mediated by a group of bacteria affiliated within a deep branch of Planctomycetes. Although the existence of anammox bacteria has been established in a number of ecosystems, its activity and ecological distribution pattern are still not well understood. The objectives of this research were to: compare different gene markers for effectively detection of them from various ecological niches, evaluate the recently developed 16S rRNA gene-based PCR primers for niche specificity, elucidate the bias of anammox bacterial diversity caused by inefficient DNA extraction in preparation of DNA templates for PCR reaction, and delineate the ecological distribution pattern of anammox bacteria along an anthropogenic nitrogen input gradient from a polluted coastal wetland to the pristine South China Sea (SCS). Several PCR primer sets for genes encoding 16S rRNA, hydrazine oxidoreductase (HZO), cytochrome cd1-containing nitrite reductase (NirS), and hydrazine synthase subunit A (HzsA) were assessed with sediments from coastal wetland, SCS, and granules from wastewater treatment plant. Selective primer sets were effective in recovering anammox bacteria from these samples, while nirS gene-based PCR primer sets were sample specific. In addition, two recently reported and widely applied 16S rRNA gene-based PCR primer sets (Brod541F/Amx820R and A438f/A684r) were further evaluated in profiling anammox bacteria from various sediment samples, showing more favorable results by A438f/A684r than Brod541F/Amx820R. Bias in anammox bacteria diversity was investigated by comparative analysis of coastal wetland sediment and rice paddy soil with PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique. Successive extractions of DNAs from coastal wetland in Hong Kong and Baijiang rice paddy soils in Northeast China were carried out to compare the diversity of ammonia/ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms, including both anammox bacteria, and ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria. Results showed that anammox bacterial diversity was seriously biased due to inefficient DNA extraction of the rice paddy soil from the first extraction, resulting in lower diversity of anammox bacteria in the samples. Changes in community composition of anammox bacteria were analyzed using sediment samples along an anthropogenic nitrogen gradient and results showed variations of anammox bacteria community structures from the upstream of Pearl River to deep sediment of the SCS. Mai Po wetlands, dominated by Kuenenia and Scalindua, contained the highest diversity of anammox bacteria followed by the shallow SCS (Scalindua zhenghei-I and S3), deep SCS (Scalindua zhenghei-I, S2 and S. arabica) and riparian sediments of Pearl River (Kuenenia and Brocadia). Salinity, inorganic nitrogen species [〖NH4〗^+, Σ(〖〖NO〗_2〗^_) + (〖〖NO〗_3〗^_)], and ratio of 〖NH4〗^+/Σ(〖〖NO〗_2〗^_) + (〖〖NO〗_3〗^_)] significantly affected the community compositions of anammox bacteria. Data collectively indicated that optimization of PCR primers enables unraveling new anammox bacterial phylotypes from the environments and current experimental procedures used in extraction of template DNA from samples seriously lower the diversity and composition of anammox bacteria retrieved. ; published_or_final_version ; Biological Sciences ; Doctoral ; Doctor of Philosophy

Content: Guaranteed off-balance sheet (consists of banker's acceptance, letter of credit and letter of guarantee), is an essential part of China's shadow banking, but neglected by current research because no data available. This paper fills the research gap, by investigate the mechanism behinds its cyclical behavior through a novel dataset. Different from developed economies, guaranteed off-balance sheet in China has long-run substitute relation with commercial loan. Therefore, any policy impacts on commercial loan growth will has a converse effect on guaranteed off-balance sheet growth indirectly. Furthermore, contrary to existing research about China's shadow banking, we find the Desirability Lending Policy conducted by People's Bank of China during 2011-2014 is the unique fundamental driving force, rather than traditional regulatory constraints, such as reserve requirement ratio and loan-to-deposit ratio. It's an example of macroprudential policy induces shadow banking activity. Moreover, guaranteed off-balance sheet growth is also influenced by macroeconomy, risk and return factors of itself, operation efficiency and creditworthiness of the bank. Hence empirical results of this paper could also be viewed as the first time to test off-balance sheet development theories with China's data

Content: I construct a model that can explain nearly all financial repression phenomena and main financial market equilibria in China. The model gets two insights: Foremost, the “financial repression” in China roots in the repressed household and state-owned enterprise (SOE) sectors rather than the finance sector. Against this background, the implicit guarantee is not the main risk of financial stability: On one hand, the implicit guarantee is an exogenous institutional factor, it already been contained in asset prices; on the other hand, the household and SOE's repressions alleviate the implicit guarantee risk. If breaking the implicit guarantee, it will cause financial turmoil and households will bear the cost. To stabilize the financial system, the central bank needs to prevent redemption between banks and to recapitalize banks; while the effect of lender-of-last-resort is limited. If keeping the implicit guarantee, through improving liquidity in the inter-bank market and relaxing the SOE repression can raise financial market efficiency remarkably. Therefore, reform coordination between different sectors is more important for today's China
