Das Engelmann-Skizzenbuch ermöglicht einen Einblick in die Entstehung von zwei der bekanntesten Werke Ludwig van Beethovens: Es dokumentiert Beethovens letzte Arbeiten an den Diabelli-Variationen und enthält frühe Skizzen zur Neunten Symphonie. Das Skizzenbuch wird hier erstmals vollständig in Transkription vorgelegt. Die enthaltenen Skizzen werden bestimmten Werken und Werkabschnitten zugeordnet und analysiert. Zudem konnten durch die Untersuchung der Schreibprozesse neue Erkenntnisse über Beethovens Arbeitsorganisation und seine Schreibstrategien gewonnen werden. Dies wird durch neue Forschungen zur Provenienz des Skizzenbuchs ergänzt: Wie zuvor nicht bekannt, beschäftigte sich bereits Johannes Brahms mit diesem Skizzenbuch.
