Content: "This book is written by two people who are experts in child psychology. But it is not written merely for the edification of their fellow experts. It is written for ordinary people-parents, teachers, and the like-who have the care of children. And it is written out of a burning conviction born of years of first-hand experience in which the writers have seen all too plainly the tragic results of the lack of this knowledge which they are trying to pass on. It is a living book written with the intention of helping people who very much need help. There are three features of the book which I find especially welcome. The first is the profuse way in which it is illustrated by stories drawn from the wide experience of the authors. Secondly I was impressed by the way in which, in accounting for traits in the child, a due balance is struck between the influence of heredity and of environment. Too many books on child psychology are made intolerably depressing because of the burden of guilt they lay upon the hapless parent as the enormity of his mismanagement of his children is relentlessly unfolded to him. Finally, I am glad that the authors have said what they have said about the child's need for religion"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2014 APA, all rights reserved)
