Content: Abstract: Five new diterpenes, cespihypotins W–Z (1–4, resp.) and cespihypotone (5) have been isolated from the AcOEt‐soluble fraction of the Formosan soft coral Cespitularia hypotentaculata. Two of them having the norverticillane skeleton, i.e., 1 and 2, and the other three, 3–5, possessing a verticillane skeleton. The structures were established as (+)‐(1βH,7E)‐6β,11β‐dihydroxynorverticilla‐4 (18),7‐diene‐10,12‐dione (1), (+)‐(1βH,7E)‐6β‐acetoxy‐11β‐hydroxynorverticilla‐4 (18),7‐diene‐10,12‐dione (2), (−)‐(1βH,7E)‐6β‐acetoxyverticilla‐4 (18),7,11‐triene‐10,12‐γ‐lactone (3), (+)‐(1βH,7E)‐6β‐acetoxy‐10‐hydroxyverticilla‐4 (18),7,11‐triene‐10,12‐γ‐lactone (4), and (+)‐(1βH,3Z)‐10β‐hydroxy‐6‐oxoverticilla‐3,11‐diene‐10,12‐γ‐lactone (5), respectively, on the basis of 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR spectroscopic analyses.

Content: Abstract: A thorough investigation of the ethyl acetate soluble fraction from a methanol extract of the resin of Ferula foetida has resulted in the isolation of a new sesquiterpene coumarin namely epi‐conferdione (1), along with four known compounds, colladonin (2), karatavicinol (3), 8‐acetoxy‐5‐hydroxyumbelliprenin (4), and asacoumarin (5). These structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic techniques, including 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configuration of the new compound was established by circular dichroism (CD).

Content: Abstract: Four new diterpenes, cespihypotins W–Z (1–4), having the verticillane skeleton and characterized by an α,β‐unsaturated γ‐hydroxycyclopentanone moiety, and a new eudesmanolide‐type sesquiterpene, cespilactam A (5), containing an α,β‐unsaturated γ‐lactam residue, were isolated from the AcOEt‐soluble fraction of the Taiwanese soft coral Cespitularia hypotentaculata. The structure and relative configuration of these metabolites was elucidated through extensive interpretation of MS, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY experiments and by comparison of their NMR data with those of related compounds.

Content: Abstract: Thirty seven taxanes were characterized from the leaves and twigs of Taiwanese yew (Taxus sumatrana, Taxaceae). Four of these metabolites are new and designated as sumataxins A–D (1–4). Compound 1 possesses an 11 (15→1),11 (10→9)‐di‐abeo‐taxane skeleton with an unusual spiro‐connected 2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane ring at C (4), whereas compound 2 has a rare β‐OH orientation at C (13) of taxane diterpene ester. In addition, sumataxin C (3) is formulated as an 11 (15→1)‐abeo‐taxane with a 4,5‐acetonide ring skeleton. Compound 4 is the first metabolite with a 4,20‐epoxy‐taxane structure. The structures of all the taxanes were established by spectroscopic methods. All compounds were evaluated for anti‐HSV‐1 and PBMC activities. Compound 9 exhibited significant enhancement of cell proliferation on peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Content: Abstract: Chemical investigation of the acetonic extract of the leaves and twigs of Taxus sumatrana (Taxaceae) led to the isolation of four new taxane diterpene esters, taiwantaxins A–D (1–4, resp.). Their structures were determined primarily on the basis of 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR techniques as well as MS. Compound 1 is a rearranged taxane diterpenoid possessing an opened oxetane ring moiety containing C (4), C (5), and C (20). The metabolites 2 and 3 belong to a 5/6/6 taxene system having a rare five‐membered γ‐lactone ring comprising C (8), C (9), C (10), and C (19). Compound 4 is an example of a taxane diterpene containing a 6/8/6 ring system with a tetrahydrofuran ring comprising C (2), C (3), C (4), and C (20). The 11 (15→1) abeo‐taxane diterpenoids, taiwantaxins A–C (1–3, resp.) are lacking an O‐bearing functionality at either C (13) or C (14). Compound 2 showed significant cytotoxic activity against human PC‐3 tumor cells.
