Content: Using Schumann's "Eichendorff Liederkreis" as the primary example, this work sheds new light on the structure of 19th-century song cycles and on Schumann's particular response to the problem of musical coherence in large scale works. Drawing on analysis, literary criticism, and source studies, this book argues for a new conception of the 19th-century song cycle. Rather than a unified whole, the cycles are seen as a fragmentary and open-ended form that enabled Schumann to express the romantic themes of transcendence and ineffability in musical terms. The book begins with a general discussion of the cycle as a genre. The heart of the book is a series of closely argued analyses of five of the Eichendorff songs, with particular attention on the relationship between text and music. Ferris concludes by setting the Liederkreis within the context of Schumann's other 1840 song cycles

Content: When Johann Sebastian Bach died, he left behind a set of engraver’s plates for Die Kunst der Fuge. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach immediately published the work, but few copies were sold. The remaining ones were given an expanded introduction and the price was reduced. Still they did not sell well, and four years later Emanuel offered the plates for sale. They eventually were sold as scrap metal. How biographers have treated this anecdote is illustrative of changing attitudes toward Emanuel. At first the emphasis was on Emanuel’s music and its great success in its own time. Emanuel himself was regarded as the son who remained most faithful to the father’s teachings and aesthetic beliefs. This began to change with the 1868 biography by Carl Hermann Bitter, which planted the seed of the idea that the sale of the plates showed an unattractive mercenary side of the composer. By the early 20th century, Albert Schweitzer could maintain that Emanuel had not only neglected his father’s artistic legacy but actually prevented the father from attaining the reputation he deserved. After World War II, most scholars dealt with this controversy simply by ignoring as much as possible the relationship between father and son. (RILM)
