In jüngster Zeit wurden Enzymvarianten der Alkoholdehydrogenase und Aldehyddehydrogenase beschrieben, die für den Alkoholstoffwechsel von genereller Bedeutung sind. Ein intensives Studium dieser Alkohol-metabolisierenden Enzyme wurde dadurch ermöglicht, daß besonders sensitive Methoden entwickelt wurden, die durch Bestimmung der Isoenzyme eine Phänotypisierung in verschiedenen menschlichen Organen, Haut, Fibroblastenkulturen und auch Haarwurzeln durchführen lassen. Aufgrund der Ergebnisse formal- und populationsgenetischer Studien an europiden und mongoliden Populationen wird eine Hypothese zur Erklärung unterschiedlicher Intoxikationsreaktionen nach Alkoholgenuß diskutiert.
