Der Architekt Ludwig Mies van der Rohe und sein Auftraggeber Hermann Lange, einer der geschäftsführenden Direktoren der Vereinigten Seidenwebereien in Krefeld, müssen - was die Bautätigkeit der späten 1920er sowie der 1930er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts in Krefeld betrifft - stets gemeinsam genannt werden. Für keine zweite Stadt in Deutschland hat Mies van der Rohe derart viele Bauwerke unterschiedlicher Funktion entworfen und zum Teil auch realisiert: die Häuser Lamge und Esters einschließlich der zugehörigen Gärten (1927-30), ein Golfclubhaus (1930), Produktions- (1930/35) und Verwaltungsgebäude (1938) für die Seidenindustrie sowie ein weiteres Wohnhaus für die Familie Lange (1935). Der Zufall wollte es, dass die bestehenden Bauten Mies van der Rohes in Krefeld nahezu gleichzeitig instandgesetzt wurden: Anlass genug für einen zusammenfassenden Bericht über die Sanierungsarbeiten.
