Abstract: Ausgelöst durch die intensive Beschäftigung mit der schon im 19. Jahrhundert in Amazonien entdeckten Terra Preta wurde in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten eine Vielzahl von Versuchen über die Herstellung und die Wirkung von Biokohle auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit, die Erträge landwirtschaftlicher Kulturen, die Nährstoffeffizienz sowie die Verminderung von Nährstoffverlusten durch Nitratauswaschung, Ammoniak- und Lachgasemissionen durchgeführt. Weiterhin soll Biokohle die Pflanzenverfügbarkeit von Schwermetallen auf belasteten Böden vermindern. Seit einigen Jahren wird Biokohle auch als eine vielversprechende Klimaschutzoption diskutiert, da damit eine Möglichkeit besteht, der Atmosphäre langfristig Kohlenstoffdioxid zu entziehen. Allerdings weisen entsprechende Versuchsanstellungen und -ergebnisse zum Einsatz von Biokohle in der Landwirtschaft eine sehr hohe Variabilität auf, die eine große Breite von negativen bis positiven Effekten abdeckt.
