Die beiden universell vorkommenden, ribosomalen Elongationsfaktoren ET‐Tu und EF‐G sind Archetypen der großen Klasse der G‐Proteine, die eine Vielzahl zellulärer Prozesse nach einem einheitlichen Schema regulieren. Die in den letzten Jahren gelungene Charakterisierung verschiedener Konformationen der Elongationsfaktoren im Kristall gewährt aufregende Einblicke in die Funktion von G‐Proteinen und in den Mechanismus der Proteinbiosynthese.
