Der unbestimmte Publikumsbegriff „toxische Beziehung“ bezieht sich auf sehr unterschiedliche Formen dysfunktionaler Partnerschaft, meist geprägt von Mechanismen wie Liebesüberflutung, Stimmungswechsel, Isolation, Kontrolle, Macht, Ungleichheit, Konflikten, Schuldzuweisungen, Unehrlichkeit, Affären, Manipulation und Aggression bis hin zu Gewalt. Die Psychologen Paulhus und Williams entwickelten 2002 das Konzept der Dunklen Triade als Charaktertrias des „toxischen“ Typus, die lautet: Narzissmus, Psychopathie, Machiavellismus, eventuell ergänzt durch Sadismus. Das Erkennen einer toxischen Beziehung eröffnet die Möglichkeit eines Kurswechsels oder Neuanfangs hin zu einer gesunden Partnerschaft, geprägt von Wohlwollen, Vertrauen, Ehrlichkeit, Autonomie, Interessenbalance, Affektkontrolle, Fehler- und Konfliktkultur.
