Lange vor der Erfindung des Films hatten die Bilder laufen gelernt. Weitsichtige Erfinder nutzten die wachsenden wissenschaftlichen Einsichten in die Wirkungen des Lichts oder die Gesetze des Raums, um den Traum vom bewegten Bild zu verwirklichen, zur belehrenden Demonstration oder zum verspielten Amüsement. Seit 20 Jahren sammelt der Filmemacher Werner Nekes Fundstücke aus dieser - von der gängigen Filmgeschichtsschreibung weitgehend vernachlässigten - Vorgeschichte des Kinos. In seinem Film stellt er wesentliche Objekte aus seiner einzigartigen Sammlung vor und demonstriert ihre noch immer faszinierende Funktion. Ein Kapitel gilt der Darstellung des Raums von der Camera Obscura über anamorphotische und stereoskopische Effekte bis zur Holographie. Ein weiteres gilt dem Phänomen der Trägheit der Wahrnehmung, die für die Illusion der Bewegung auf raffinierteste Weise genutzt wird. Der Film von Nekes wird so zur ebenso faszinierenden wie informativen Entdeckungsreise in das Zauberreich der bewegten Bilder in der vor-filmischen Zeit. (Nekes))
