Anhand exemplarischer Analysen der Projekte von Allan Sekula und Moira Zoitl untersucht die Autorin, wie aus der öffentlichen Aufmerksamkeit verdrängte Arbeitsbereiche sichtbar gemacht und die darin Beschäftigten ermächtigend dargestellt werden. Die Transformation der Industriestaaten in Dienstleistungsgesellschaften lässt ›alte‹ Arbeitsformen, obwohl weiterhin vorhanden, obsolet erscheinen oder erkennt ihnen den Status von Arbeit ab. Untersucht wird, mit welchen Bildern der Arbeitswelt künstlerische Projekte die Relevanz dieser Tätigkeiten reklamieren, inwiefern dokumentarische Darstellungsweisen mit ihrem referentiellen Anspruch geeignet sind, gesellschaftspolitische Anliegen zu transportieren, und wie dieser Anspruch nach den gründlichen Infragestellungen durch Digitalisierung, Poststrukturalismus etc. aufrechterhalten werden kann.
