Die Erforschung der Kometen sieht heute schon auf ein sehr ehrwürdiges Alter zurück. Sie beginnt mit dem Wiederaufleben der Naturwissenschaften in Europa, d. h. vor etwa 400 Jahren. Was vorher getan war, zählt nicht. Tycho Brahe und Kepler, die am Anfang stehen, übernahmen aus dem Mittelalter über ihre Natur einige überlieferte, falsche Ansichten des Aristoteles und ein ängstliches Zauberwesen. Noch bis in die Zeit der Aufklärung hinein galten sie in der breiten Öffentlichkeit als Ankünder von irgend etwas Üblem. Wie in der gesamten Astronomie, so wurde auch bei den Kometen in den hundert Jahren von Tycho Brahe bis Newton schon ein gewaltiger Schritt vorwärts getan. Es gelang ihre räumliche Einordnung in den Kosmos. Man bewies, daß sie sich zwischen den Planeten hindurchbewegen, und aus der Newtonschen Mechanik ergaben sich zwanglos die möglichen Formen ihrer Bahnen um die Sonne: Ellipsen, Parabeln, Hyperbeln. Bis heute sind rund 600 Kometenbahnen berechnet worden. Darunter befindet sich eine ganze Anzahl solcher, die durch Planetenstörungen eine radikale Umgestaltung erfuhren. Das gewonnene Material zeigt gewisse statistische Gesetzmäßigkeiten, aus denen sich Schlüsse in Hinsicht auf den Ursprung und die Entwicklung der Kometenkörper ziehen lassen
