Neben grundsätzlichen Ausführungen zur Malerei beinhaltet das Buch eine Fülle handwerklicher Beschreibungen, Rezepte für die Herstellung von Farben, Angaben über Rohstoffe, so z.B. dass die Meister des 13. und 14. Jahrhunderts für zu bemaldende Holztafeln Feigenholz für gut geeignet befanden, die Grundierung von Leinwänden, grundlegende Techniken, etwa wie man mit Hilfe von durchsichtig gemachten nämlich dünngeschabten und mit Leinöl getränktem Ziegenpergament eine Meisterzeichnung kopiert, Zinn zu vergolden um alte Gemälde aufzufrischen, aus Käse oder Kalk Leime herzustellen, wie man grüne Farbe mit Hilfe von Weinessig aufbessert. Dieser Schatz an Kenntnissen und Techniken erschloss erst wieder das vergessene Handwerk der Malerei dieser Zeit. Neben einer Bibel der Kunsthistoriker und der Restauratoren ist das Buch aber auch zur Bibel der Kunstfälscher geworden. So greift der bekannte Kunstfälscher Eric Hebborn in seinem Buch The Art Forger's Handbook auf viele Rezepte Cenninis zurück. (Victoria Finlay: Das Geheimnis der Farben. Eine Kulturgeschichte. S. 23)
