Telle est l'origine du Chèvrefeuille de Marie de France, et celle de bien des lais : ils naissent du souvenir d'une émotion. De Marie de France on sait peu de chose. Elle vécut dans la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle, était liée à la cour d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine, et fut la première femme poète à écrire en langue vernaculaire. Son oeuvre illustre un courant littéraire alors en plein essor, le "lai narratif", qui est en fait un récit, un conte. La floraison du genre correspond à l'apogée des Plantagenêt ; le lai participe à leur rayonnement.
