Wissenschaftliches Kompendium, das den gegenwärtigen Stand der Frisistik umfasst. Das Fach hat sich im Lauf des 20. Jahrhunderts aus der germanischen Philologie entwickelt und stellt heute eine eigenständige Disziplin dar, in der sowohl die Geschichte dieser westgermanischen Sprache mit ihren Dialekten und Literaturen als auch die heutigen Verbreitungsgebiete in den Niederlanden, im Saterland/Niedersachsen und in Nordfriesland untersucht werden. Das Handbuch informiert systematisch in 79 von 45 Fachwissenschaftlern verfassten Artikeln über alle Aspekte der heutigen internationalen Forschungstätigkeit und über aktuelle Fragen der Standardisierung, der Sprachpflege und des Schutzes als Minderheitssprache sowie die damit befassten Institutionen. Die Artikel sind nach Wahl der Autoren auf englisch (33) oder deutsch (46) abgefasst; speziell mit dem Nordfriesischen befassen sich neun Beiträge. Als Standardwerk zu diesem landeswichtigen Thema trotz des hohen Preises und der wissenschaftlichen Zielrichtung über die LZB hinaus empfohlen. (I. Hanewald)
