Im 19. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich Belgrad von einer osmanisch geprägten Provinzstadt zur Hauptstadt eines Nationalstaates. Marija Đokić zeigt in dieser Kulturgeschichte der Belgrader Theaterlandschaft des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, dass serbische und europäische Theaterpraktiken hier in einen produktiven Austausch traten und zur Ausbildung einer nationalen Identität, der Europäisierung des Westbalkans und der Entstehung der Jugoslawischen Idee beitrugen. Der innovativen Studie liegt ein weit gefasster Theaterbegriff zugrunde, der nicht nur das serbische Nationaltheater, sondern auch das Musiktheater, Varieté oder den Zirkus in den Blick nimmt. Đokić geht zudem den transnationalen Verflechtungen der Belgrader Theaterwelt und der Bedeutung des Mikrokosmos Theater für die Kulturgeschichte des jungen Balkanstaats nach. Es gelingt ihr auf diese Weise ein grundlegend neues Bild der Belgrader Theaterlandschaft und der serbischen Gesellschaft zwischen 1841 und 1914 zu zeichnen.

Angaben zur beteiligten Person Đokić: Marija Đokić studierte Geschichte an der Universität Belgrad und Osteuropastudien an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Sie ist als Projektmanagerin im Bereich der interaktiven Onlinemedien tätig. Sie wurde für ihre innovative Dissertationsschrift »Eine Theaterlandschaft für Belgrad. Verflechtungen nationaler und europäischer Theaterpraktiken 1841–1914« mit dem Förderpreis der Fritz und Helga Exner-Stiftung ausgezeichnet. Mit dem Preis würdigt die mit der Südosteuropa-Gesellschaft verbundene Stiftung besondere Leistungen in der Südosteuropa-Forschung. Zudem erhält sie den Andrej-Mitrović-Preis für Geschichte der Michael-Zikic-Stiftung.
