Mit diesen Trainings können Kinder mit Autismus vieles aufholen und ausgleichen, was andere Kinder als Säuglinge oder Kleinkinder mühelos und intuitiv erlernt haben. Autismus ist eine kognitive Entwicklungsstörung, die nicht heilbar ist, wie wir heute wissen. Viele Programme für Kinder mit Autismus versprechen, deren Defizite unmittelbar und kurzfristig auszugleichen. Doch Therapien zum auditiven oder sensorischen Training oder Techniken zur Verhaltensänderung scheitern oft oder haben keine anhaltende Wirkung. Die Autorinnen setzen bei den basalen sozialen Kompetenzen an, deren Fehlen den späteren Erwerb komplexer sozialer Leistungen (z.B. Sprache, Umgang mit anderen Menschen) beeinträchtigen und zu Defiziten und Auffälligkeiten führen, die Kindern mit Autismus das Leben schwer machen. Sie haben soziale Trainings für Kinder unterschiedlichen Alters entwickelt, für Drei- bis Fünfjährige, für Fünf- bis Siebenjährige, für Sieben- bis Elfjährige, für Elf- bis Sechzehnjährige mit durchschnittlichen oder guten kognitiven Fähigkeiten. Die Trainings sind sehr übersichtlich gegliedert und können leicht abgewandelt und der jeweiligen Gruppe angepasst werden. Auch Kinder mit einer zusätzlichen Lernbehinderung oder mit einer eher unklaren Diagnose können deshalb von vielen Übungen profitieren.
