Klaus Kinskis eigenwilliges Porträt des berühmten Geigenvirtuosen Nicolò Paganini. Eingefasst durch Szenen eines legendären Konzerts in Parma, zeigt der Film einige Stationen im Leben des Musikers, das mit einer schweren Krankheit endet. Dabei legt er besonderen Wert auf die Besessenheit des Künstlers, seine sexuelle Gier und zugleich das Begehren seiner Verehrerinnen sowie die Liebe zur Musik, die ihn zu verbrennen scheint. Kinski, der das Projekt seiner einzigen Regierarbeit lange Jahre vergeblich zu realisieren versuchte, spielt und inszeniert die Figur mit maßloser Expressivität und Exaltiertheit und setzt dabei das Delirierende und Haltlose über eine runde und professionelle Inszenierung.
